Correct me if I am wrong, but don't all companies that have any sort of information about their users use it to make money? While I dislike having my information shared with anyone, at least Google is using it to create a feature that is helpful to the users too.
As great as Google is, things like this is why I've started using DuckDuckGo.
I would rather they ask if you want the data collected to get the tailored results and everyone else can stick with what we have now. I personally don't care for tailored results so I would rather they didn't collect my information and share it.

Your data is collected regardless of you having a Google account. And that's nothing new, Google have been doing this for many many years.
So has facebook.
While I'll probably never be able to sever my ties to Google, I'm using Duck Duck Go more and more every day. I'm just sick of seeing search results tailored to my profile, getting to some standard search results with Google is a real effort lately.
I'm currently searching for a good enough Gmail alternative. Any suggestions?
I never heard of DuckDuckGo until this thread.
I love it, thank you!

Have a wrench, an emblem, and a medal, zugu.
I don't have a problem with personalised results because regardless with what I search I get what I want to get and get the information I need. I respect what DuckDuckGo try to do and its pretty neat but I get pretty similar results as I would with google.
Plus I love my gmail, youtube and all my other google products I used including my phone.

It's not like they tell people who you are.
They associate your search history with your account to cater advertisements to you. They don't tell advertisers about you, the advertisers tell Google who they want to advertise tom and Google matches that with people's search history to give relevant advertisements.
Any data they do share is anonymous aggregated data.
I honestly don't have a problem with any of this.

Understandable, they sure are great products!
And if you don't care about companies buying in on your personal information and using it almost as they please, then there's no problem in using Google or Facebook products either.

Also, I'm not using Mac or Safari. What the hell?
Duckduckgo is impressive but for some reason I still like google, maybe one day.
I don't mind "filter bubbles" because I don't use Google for topics of politics or morality - I use it to find information which can't really be biased - like technical specifications or some random science thing I saw. (or to get to a specific website because I use chrome and I'm too lazy to type out a full URL)
If I want news I go to the BBC - and if that's a filter bubble then duckduckgo can't help me there.
Obviously not everyone uses the internet like me though.
(I noticed when I clicked on the web history thing on the duckduckgo page that mine had been disabled, I imagine I went on some privacy purge of my Google account a while ago)

But this does affect others. Part of what made the internet so great is that for many people, it was the first time seeing the opposing view points to many things.
You know what I don't like? I was searching for something on google and it displayed me some Google+ profiles that kinda matched search. But I don't want to see that, I don't even have a G+.
Never ever seen g+ pages in my search results
