Hey FP,
My father's android phone (Galaxy S2) has been acting weird since he got it. The wifi seems perpetually active (downloading and uploading) and it's killing the battery. The only way to stop it is to disable wifi completely.
I tried disabling programs and uninstalling stuff. Even a factory reset didn't work. Could it be a problem in the android OS?
I recently installed tPacketCapture and ran it while the wifi was on. Now I'm staring at the pcap log in Wireshark, and I'm not entirely sure what to do.
I can see a lot of traffic between the phone and a single IP (about 50 per second). That's definitely gotta be it. I'm a little lost though, as this is my first time with a pcap file.
How can I use this info to find out what service on the phone is downloading so much?
Thanks in advance,
Most likely a software glitch, update if possible, otherwise you may have to install another ROM

That's problem, there's no update (and oddly, even though they said a Android update was coming down the pipeline, that was over 2 months ago).
Is there no way to figure out what service these packets are related to?
What is the IP address that it is connecting to? Have you done a reverse DNS lookup to see what it is?

10.8.0.1
I tried doing a lookup, doesn't come up with anything :/

That's an internal IP, meaning the host should be on your network.

Ah, I feel stupid... That would be the phone. I got it confused because the other IP is really close to my own IP and I guess I assumed it was mine. Should've posted both.
The correct IP is actually 173.194.43.70
And... now that I look it up it comes up as Google Inc. In fact I can enter it in an address bar and be taken to Google's front page.
So that pretty much confirms it's an OS issue... Now what specific part is a little trickier to figure out.

Check your synchronisation settings, maybe it's set to update too often or your system time is wrong and the SSL handshake fails.
Hey again guys!
Hate to be bumping this old thread again, but I figured I'd give a progress update (and possibly more information that could help solve this problem).
After trying to disable sync settings plus many other suggestions I found online my Dad just decided to forgo using Wifi automatically (he turns it on when he needs it). I said fine, and it was left at that.
However, I just got a Galaxy S4 yesterday after my old phone began to crap out and guess what? Constant downloading is back! I looked at tPacketCapture logs and once again it shows a lot of constant connections to two Google servers.
I've tried disabling sync settings, etc, but no luck. When trying to see what app is using the data, it's either labeled "OS Services" or "Android OS". Frusterating.
Guess I'm lucky though, I've found a few posts where some guys had Android OS take up 20-30 GB! Damn!
So anyway, I'm thinking, what are the common things here? Well, for one, they're both Samsung, so it could be a Samsung app? (Would that be included under Android OS?) Also, I read about Samsung Galaxy phones having issues with D-Links, which is the router I use (albeit those were different reported problems, such as constant disconnects and such). My Dad is running Android 4.1.1 and I'm on 4.2.2, if that helps.
Thanks in advance!

Annnnd, another update! I dusted off an old Linksys B/G router from my basement and hooked it up. The constant download is gone, and it works great! Now... My issue is, is this a software issue with D Links, or a difference in settings between routers...
