As much as I like valve, I don't see this being successful. If people want a PC they will buy a PC, if they want a console, they will buy a console.
Not necessarily. I'm thinking of buying the streaming version so I can play some of my controller PC games on my HDTV, as my computer is in another room that I don't want to move.

You sure it's not possible to create a mix of both? Like a gateway to PC games for console gamers.

It might be possible but that doesn't mean the end result will be satisfactory.

not really? people buy consoles for the convenience, not because they make some arbitrary decision to be a console gamer at some point in their lives based on nothing. they want the console because they buy it, plug it into their tv and play games. PCs need maintenance, upgrades, they cost a lot more money to get running well, etc. if the steambox offers the same plug-and-play experience other consoles do, and manages to compete in their marketing, it could be successful. the only thing i see stopping the steambox from being a popular console is the fact that its new and it'll be ridiculously hard to break past the xbox/ps3 stonewall that has been maintained for nearly a decade

I think that is what they are trying to do, and I don't see it working. In a way, it is what console companies have been trying to do with this latest generation. They have added all kinds of extra features onto the consoles that really don't help at all.
If valve can do it, good for them. I wish them luck. Just don't see it working out.

But that would just be making a console, not the type of hybrid valve seems to be striving for. I guess I could see it working if they are able to replicate the ease of use of a console, while making it more open and PC like. Even then I only see it being a niche market though. I just don't know if valve has the funds to compete with Microsoft and Sony on a marketing/logistics level either.
;39812063']They have added all kinds of extra features onto the consoles that really don't help at all.
I doubt it's about offering the features PC has since that would defeat the purpose of a console (= closed, fool-proof system). It's more about being able to run PC games, making the games market more universal and PC games more accessible. (On the contrary, they chose Linux, simply because it is more configurable and won't require expensive licenses and they want to support that OS, so that more companies feel ready to develop for Linux.)
Ricochet 2 is happening.
More on topic though, it's great to hear more from Gabe about this, even if it isn't really much news. I'm looking forward to see what happens in the next 4-6 months though.

why do people pretend the steambox isn't a console just because it's being associated with a PC game developer? a console is basically just a plug and play gaming computer with some peripherals. the steambox is no more of a "hybrid" than the other consoles

I think it has potential to work, but its at a very early stage to release.
I assume that their plan is they will release it and encourage developers to port to Linux and add controller compatibility to their games (Maybe they will offer perks for doing so?)
Either way its a very ingenious idea. Their view is that nowadays there isn't really much different between a console and a computer; It is just as easy to start up a PC on Linux and be in a game 2 mins later than with a console.
Now if they improve big picture, get more devs backing their machine with controller support, then they have effectively created a PC that blurs the line between PC/consoles and opens up a new market to them.

And considering the architecture adopted by the PS4, it makes even less sense to draw an imaginary line in the sand between them at the hardware level.
He added that his company had still to finalise how the console's controller would work as it continued to explore the possibility of including sensors to measure the gamers' body states.
Will it be able to measure my frustration over no episode 3?
Hahaha, I love how he specifically highlights Ricochet and DoD when asked about HL3 and P3 again.
I really hope 'Steam Box' (Even Gabe is calling it that now...) takes off. I'm not the target market, obviously, but if this takes off and becomes a recognized competitor to the big three, it'll push the others to become more PC-like or Steam-like with their own systems in order to keep up. This can only mean good things for the console market, especially given its current state.
I'm so tired of major consoles having huge, arbitrary restrictions on both developers and customers. And don't even get me started on the outright money-grubbing; I don't even use my 360's main menu anymore because I'm tired of looking at ads.

Not really, depending on how much it's going to cost, it might turn into the go-to PC for people on a budget.
If the device can be used as a cheap alternative for a server, I'll surely buy one. They still have that "you can install anything" going for it right?

this seems kinda dumb
I wonder if it will be able to play games you own on steam, and not have to buy them again. If thats the case I think it would be a massive selling point to both PC and console gamers.

I'd presume you wouldn't have to rebuy most games, just log in on your existing account.

I wouldn't complain about a new DoD, though. Especially if it was on Source 2.

Me neither, but it just struck me as funny in the context and because of:

Probably, but they have a few things going for them, at least. The WiiU has had some pretty extreme highs and lows in its relatively short lifetime so far, a lot of people aren't even close to sold on the PS4, and it's very hard to believe Microsoft's next gen console will be much better than what we've already seen. People who might consider picking one of those three to be choosing "the least of three evils" might be tempted to try anything new.
Before anyone asks, because someone always asks: No you do not have to buy all your games again. However, you will have to wait for your favorite games to be ported to Linux, since the Steam Box will obviously be running a Linux-based system.
Otherwise you'll have to replace the installed system with Windows yourself, which according to Valve is going to be completely possible.
I can see this being a competitor to appletv since linux is fairly open and would make a pretty good media server

How much more open could any system possibly be???

A new Day of Defeat would be pretty awesome.
How much more open could any system possibly be???
i don't always like to say linux is really open, or any OS in that matter, there's got to be something that you want to change but can't
I really really want that new Ricochet game
I don't care about the steambox thing because it seems it's an HTPC and if it shares the Linux steam library then there's no point in getting one when you could just get the games on PC or get your own HTPC with the parts you want
the biometrics thing seems like an alright gimmick, wonder if they can pull it off? Best implementation of that I've seen was having to stay quiet while wearing a headset in a Manhunt game to avoid getting spotted.

I think it's the whole openness thing that sets it apart.
“We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That’ll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We’re not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination.”
A "normal" PC OS, giving you full control over the file system and ability to install any PC applications and use PC peripherals, makes it more of a PC than a console in my opinion.
Great interview by the BBC, guy really seemed to know his stuff.

What is a "console" to you?
