How much would a build that could run most games at, at least medium/high settings and could run programs like Vegas or After Effects without the computer exploding? I defiantly don't have the money for it now, but I'm wondering how much money I'd need for something like this. I really wouldn't want to spend over 1000 dollars as I don't make very much money.
Depending on what you have available already (namely monitor and input devices) this can be easily done for under 1000 dollars, and a 1000 dollar budget with a monitor still allows for quite adequate raw power. You just don't get all the bells and whistles. Nvidia in this price range generally doesn't quite perform on the same level as ATI cards for gaming, but the CUDA core is obviously essential for the adobe products.
However with the speed that the market moves, particularly in the 600-1000 dollar range, any suggestions we make have a good chance of being somewhat incorrect in as little as 2 weeks, and will almost always be trumped in a few places in a month.
We can give you some speculative pricing, but it's very unreliable. Your best bet is to come back when you are looking to make a purchase within a month generally speaking. There are some things that we can have you look out for, but first we need a bit more information.
What is your theoretical maximum budget, and how low would you like to cut things?
Are you willing to cut a corner or two here and there in the mean time so that you can upgrade components down the road? (In other words is it worth it to spend 800 dollars now and 350 later vs 1000 now?)

Right now, a good video editing pc would hover around $900 if custom built, probably closer to $1,100 if not. As for the future, who knows, it prices fluctuate all the time.
I would recommend for you to do some raid 0 or something to get a good harddrive read / write. Atleast if you want to do fraps recording.
