Hdd detected as "initio default device controlle" - Western Digital.

Hello, I've had a "Western Digital MyPassport Essential 500gb" for about three years. And recently it has been messing up, I plug it in, it would be active but it's detected as an "Initio Default driver".
I've googled it and there are about five bazillion other people with the same problem. Now being forums, you never get the answers, but the suggestions were "plug it in on the back side" since it fails to recognize it in the front hub. I've tried it and it connected normally a few times, but it just messes up after doing that once.
All I can do is remove the "Initio Default Device Controller" from device manager and after plugging it back in the same routine continues on.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and possibly knows a fix for this?
Take out the HDD and put it in your case or get a new enclosure and see if it works. If you don't have a spare enclosure, I don't know what to say.
Hi, I got the same problem with "Western Digital MyPassport Essential" after Win 7 had been installed. And like you found nothing by goggling in forums. Unbelievable, but the solution is very simple.
After trying four USB cables I connected my WD external drive with short inconvenient USB cable (just 20cm - appr. 8inch) that had lain without any use and - what a miracle! - it worked, disk recognized.
This cable is not just short, it is thick, too. I'm not sure, but may be it's USB3. (A thinner USB2 50cm length cable from my new Canon camera didn't work). By the way, "Initio" disappeared from device manager.
One of my clients had a WD MyBook with a similar problem. I think it's due to the crappy enclosure design leading to overheating and causing either the drive to fail, or the power/SATA combo connector to eventually creep off from thermal expansion/contraction. In my case, it was the latter and I managed to fix it and get a free MyBook drive (they didn't want it anymore heh.)
If various USB cables don't work, open the enclosure up (try not to destroy it, there's probably instructions on how to open it) and reseat the power/SATA connector.
Heh, I'm still having the same problem. It works on every other computer, except mine.
"Initio default controller" driver installed. It did work fine after a fresh install of Windows 7, but after installing a few Windows-updates and rebooting, BAM! Nope.

Try a dual power cable: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-USB-Cable-Dual-Power/sim/B000FKP7XA/2
Your PCs USB ports might not supply enough power, so having it draw power from 2 would help.
