Idk if you read the article, but all she did was use her real life memories about her relationship with her father to try and have a better understanding of what a father would be thinking - which turns out, he didn't want to forget his child, something almost every decent father on earth wouldn't want to forget.
Would you rather her use real life inspiration (something good writers do) or just make some shit up that she doesn't know anything about
i would rather tomb raider be about raiding tombs.
Tomb Raider has always had Lara's dad as a big part of her characterisation. She became an archaeologist to be more like him and a couple of the games have her looking into things he had researched before he died.

Originally her family disowned her when she became a thrill seeker after a surviving plan crash and learned to survive for two weeks until she made it back to civilization. the movie and legend is where I think she got her dad's story connection.
