So I'm planning on getting a new phone (My beloved N95 is getting a bit obsolete) and so I have decided a few things:
- Iphones are too expensive
- I would like an HTC, because of Android and HTC sense (Which sounds very helpful indeed)
So, after looking around, I decided on the HTC Desire. I then saw the HD model, which features:
- A larger screen (But same resolution!)
- Same CPU
- Lower (generally) battery life
- b/g/n Wifi (As opposed to just b/g on the Desire)
- ~250Mb extra RAM (totaling up to 750MB)
Everything else is either the same or something that I really don't care about (such as the upgraded camera, as long as it can take photos I don't really mind)
So, can anyone advise me through personal experience or extra knowledge?
I'm torn between paying more for the Desire HD and saving some money and getting the Desire.
By the looks of things, the HD version isn't really worth the extra money, but if you can tell me otherwise that would be helpful.

Main questions:
- Does the HTC Desire have the same HTC sense features as the HD version? (Such as the remote tracking and remote wiping etc)
- Is the screen on the Desire large enough for comfortable use when browsing and typing?
Thanks very much!
the desire is getting a refresh just around the corner so if you wait around a bit you could get a phone better than both!

or at least one of the two you mentioned cheaper
I was about to buy a Desire HD but the screen was rather crap compared to the Desire, at least in my opinion. The Desire was like looking at a beautiful rainbow whist the Desire HD was a gray and sad place.
Then again, like Ralbane said, lots of new phones just around the corner so just sit tight. That's what I'm doing. Waiting for the Galaxy S2.
Wait for the dual-core android phones that are being released at the moment.

I see, but then I'm in the same position with those, they are normally too expensive right after they come out, so they aren't really an option considering I'm a student with hardly any money :v:
I did see a video where the screens were compared and I agree, the HD version looked less colorful. However, it is bigger, but is the Desire's big enough anyway?

My friend has a Desire and it does suffice in my opinion. You should go down to a store and check them both out in person.
Its not the same CPU, the Desire HD one got a newer Version with a better GPU.

Yes and yes. I've got a Desire Z. It's just great. Only thing that bugs me personally is the battery life. I use my HTC for lots of stuff so it drains the battery quicker than I'm used to (I used to use older basic phones)...so I personally wouldn't get the HD.

Sorry my mistake, I believe they do have the same clock speed though
got an N95 myself as well, waiting for Galaxy S II, perhaps upgrading to it, or checkin' out the price drops.

I see. The HD battery apparently does not last as long. Perhaps it looks like a yes for the Desire then...
You say the desire Z is good? Since you have both onscreen and physical keyboard, could you tell me if the onscreen is easy to get used to?

You see the thing is, I can get a special deal only on the HTC Desire right now, because I've been with them since they changed their name 10 years ago (T-mobile, my phone even still says one2one on it :v:)
I have the Desire, and I love that it has real buttons and the trackpad is great. And you can get the new sense right now by installing a different ROM, or you can wait until June. Or install CyanogenMod and don't care. Also you can get LauncherPro for Sense widgets. But to be honest, it's your choice.
But listen to me on this one:
DO NOT BUY MOTOROLA
Just giving a helping hand :v:

Never been keen on Motorola, their smartphones seem to be outdone by many other phones
I'm not too familiar with HTC phones, but I would like to correct you on one thing.
iPhone 3G is now only $50 with a 2 year plan, at least here.

Oh yes and Sony Ericsson. I had no plans to ever buy a phone from them. Ever.
Well, Sony Ericsson K750 was the shit..
Really, the companies you should consider are HTC, Samsung and LG.

Their hardware is perfectly acceptable, and their stock software isn't the worst around. The real issue with new Motorola phones is the fact that they lock them down so hard.
Also take a look at HTC HD2, it runs Windows Mobile 6, but you can install anything on it: Meego, Windows Phone 7, Android, Ubuntu.
Hey OP, I've got the normal Desire, it's pretty awesome!
And it's much cheaper, I'm on contract for £10 a month for 18 months!
Wait for HTC Desire S or HTC Thunderbolt.
But the HD is pretty sweet if you can manage the battery life well. The Desire has many more ROMs available though, even honeycomb!

Listen to this man whatever you do DO NOT buy moto.
They will leave you in the the dust once they bring a new phone out, and give next to no support. I bought a high-end smartphone from them and they literally dumped it on release, not a single upgrade.

Yup. I've never had a touchphone before this and it's still easy. The fact that your phone gives this little buzz when you press a key on the onscreen keyboard makes it feel like you're actually typing (instead of just tapping on a screen).
I usually use the onscreen for short messages and when I gotta type something longer, I whip out the actual keyboard.
I'm pretty sure that when you turn the phone sideways, the onscreen keyboard is as big as the normal keyboard, so its not all fiddly to type on when your used to it
Wait for the Galaxy S 2, or if you are really impatient, get a Galaxy/Nexus S.
I'm currently using a ZTE Blade, awesome features for the price.
£99
600Mhz CPU (safely overclocks to 800Mhz)
512Mb of RAM
800x480 4" capacitive OLED display
up to 32Gig of external storage supported.
The modding comunity is loving this phone, I'm currently running 2.2, but there is an unstable 2.3 rom available.

I was unaware you can OC a phone...interesting
As a Desire user, I can only say get a Desire. But DHD has a better look and is faster. The only thing I dislike of the Desire HD is it has a too big screen. (A.k.a "Is this a phone or a tablet?")
I have an HD and I'm glad I got it, I style on everyone's desires.
Desire HD's screen itself is (in my opinion) not as good, and the size of it is too big. The HTC Desire is perfect size and a beautiful screen, and has a ton of mods for it and is easy to root. I love it :v:.
But it doesn't have access to https://www.htcsense.com which is annoying, only 4 HTC phones do.
