• Can't update to Windows 7

Hey guys. So, i've just set up my new computer, and in an effort to get everything up and running i am trying to install Windows 7. It says to update it over an existing copy of XP or Vista, so i have XP put on here for now. I downloaded the Windows 7 installed through the Microsoft site, and it downloaded just fine. It is in a folder, and it won't install because it says that it can't due to the folder being Read Only. I have unclicked the read-only box only to have it immediatly return to read-only status upon closing the window. So, i tried moving it else where and no such luck. So i went to the microsoft website and got a slightly helpful guide on using the command prompt to cancel out the Read Only block. That didn't work either. I'm not ruling out that i didn't do it 100% correctly, since the instructions were a bit vague, but i have no idea what to do. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this before, but any help on getting this to work would be greatly appreciated. Also, i guess i should mention i am logged in as the only used with admin capabilities. Thanks in advance for the help guys.
I thought Windows 7 had to be fresh installed
Did you buy the student deal or something for $30? If so did you also get the back-up CDs?
I didn't get the backup, but holy shit, i think you just helped! I went back to the e-mail i got and they have an ISO of the thing you can download and burn to DVD! Ghostofme, you may just be my internet jesus! Slayer, you can upgrade over it, and if you get the student package it's only 30 dollars or so to get Home or Premium in either 32 or 64bit to go over a Vista or XP install. Thanks for the replies gentlemen.
You may need a special iso burner.
Maybe MagicISO? http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm
I think they DVD drive i just got comes with some, but i will keep that link just in case. Thanks guys. Luckily i've got XP working so i can hopefully do this. It would just be awesome if XP wasn't a pain in the ass to begin with.

Fair enough. Thanks for the help!
Xp service pack 3 can burn isos with no software. [editline]02:28PM[/editline] Don't quote me on that I haven't burned something with xp since 03
I couldn't do a direct upgrade when I switched from XP to Win7. May just be me though.
I am now successfully on Windows 7. Thanks for all the replies everyone, and Ghost thanks for the post that got me thinking that i could make my own backup DVD.
