Building a PC for the first time and need some help.

So this is my first time ever putting a PC together and I'm mostly going off what my buddy has told me and I've read around. Here's what I've come up with:
CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz Octa-core processor
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+ AMD 990FX
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
PSU: Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-650 650W
HDD: Taking the two out of my current PC. Can't currently remember the make and models. I want to say Seagate something.
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 570. This should be it. This part is not subject to change as it is already in my possession (got it for free from a friend).
Any advice or pointers you can give me would be appreciated.
Edit: I suppose I should specify this is for games. My current PC is way dated.
What's your budget?
I wouldn't get that CPU if I were you. Go with an overclocking Intel motherboard and processor. You can even keep the within the same budget. Specifically you want the i5-4670k and a z87 motherboard. The g45 gaming or the Gigabyte z87x-d3h is the gaming motherboard of choice. This combo pack may interest you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1326986. The PSU is better than yours and the RAM is exactly the RAM you have listed. Its 524.99 as opposed to your current 509.96 for the PSU, MOBO, CPU, and RAM and its much, much better. I'm running that right now actually, and it's pretty fantastic even without a dedicated graphics card. It would make a lovely companion to your 570.

Realistically I'd say $700 is the top of my budget. I could hold off until next payday if I need to, but I'd like to get a new PC going sooner rather than later.

What kind drawbacks are there with the processor I was looking at? From what I've read it seems like Intel is generally better performance, but AMD is more cost effective for what you get.

I'd like for this PC to be at least mid-tier for a little while before I need to upgrade again.

Sorry to say it, but what you read it pretty much wrong. If your gaming, Intel is always the processor of choice. You should also keep in mind that AMD processors have half the cores they claim to and a hyperthreading-like technology. As far as cost-effectiveness, it really doesn't matter because AMD's absolute top of the line can't even compare to Intel's midrange processors. You bottom out on performance much before you can get a good gaming processor.

Much of the time, even a i3 can beat the 8350 (Single threaded). So no, not really.
Thanks for the help. So besides the processor how did I do on my first attempt?
Not the AMD FX I'm afraid. A Core i3 can sometimes knock it out. What model hard drives are you carrying over? Do you already have an operating system you can use for this build? For a $700 budget you can build a high end gaming PC considering you already have a GTX 570.
Power supply: XFX Core Edition PRO550w
RAM: 8GB
Motherboard: Z87-C
CPU: Core i5-4670k
Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO
$532.95 (without case)
If you're open to different cases then for a little bit extra or less over the Antec I can highly recommend the Fractal R4. Prices can slightly vary depending on what colour you're into:
White
Titanium Grey
Black
I have the Fractal R3 and it's by far one of most amazing cases I've come across. The R4 is a one up from it.
If you're running a IDE CD/DVD drive then I recommend to get one that fully supports SATA. IDE is pretty much outdated on modern machines:

I wouldn't get that motherboard. Only one gen 3 slot for $140 isn't worth it. I'd go with the motherboards I mentioned previously.
