I updated to ios5 and it deleted everything off my iphone. Although this was fine for my music as i was able to transfer it back from my computer easily, all my contacts are gone and i dont know how to get them back on my phone. my phone is the 3gs model. What do i do?
If you've got previous backups, then why not just restore your content and then back it up to something like Gmail, if you've got it setup as an exchange account?
If i click in restore in itunes, how do i know it wont just revert to ios4 with nothing on it?

I just did that, its still on ios5 and no contacts or anything are on here and that was the only backup im scared
Perhaps you just never synced your phone for it to back up. Take a look at Windows Contacts. If your contacts aren't there, then you're pretty much screwed.
alright fuck apple seriously
I lost all my photos in a similar way, apparently iTunes has a different definition of "backup" from the rest of the world.

I thought mine deleted my contacts too, but I just had iCloud set to 'On' without first syncing with it. All my contacts data was there after I turned iCloud off, and all I did was sync, turn it back on and... it just worked.
I had my calander wiped clean when i updated And then icloud threw wierd as fuck contacts i put on my mac mini in 2007 I don't even know most of these people anymore
A lot of people have had this kind of problem, really quite embarrasing when you think of that they really only have 3 phones to think of.
Answer? You're using a 3GS. They want you to stop using it and upgrade.

Did you click yes to backing up your data before you started to update? Because if not then you probably did lose everything. If you did then you just need to back up.
If you need to go back and inspect the backup, install iBackupBot.
