Okay, so normally on my 3Meg connection I get around 30 ping.
Today it is bouncing between 500-600 and won't go down. I am convinced it is one of the PCs on my network. I have one PC on a patch cable, and the other two on wireless.
I want to know if theres a way to monitor my local connection, like, to see which IP is causing all this lag.
From there I could track the PC down on my own, but is there some software I could get to monitor it? Or even better, something that comes with Windows that would help?
I'm using Windows 7 on all three PCs.
Thanks in advance!
Routers usually have that kind of stuff.
Ctrl alt del.
Network usage.
wierd, but from my knowledge ping is the amount of time in miliseconds for packets to make a round trip to the server your playing on. try finding a server somewhere closer to your area. the easier option would be to check your router settings or just reset the router.
Sorry, I see I have a typo in the OP, when I said local connection, I meant check to see how much ping each one has as far as internet connection goes.

This is how bad it is.
Its regularly,
Down: ~2.5Meg
Up:400Kbps every time.
Ping: ~35

And Taipan, from what I see, theres hardly any activity on my network. But maybe I should check on all three PCs?
^Don't show off. Try unplugging each computer from the internet at a time and see what happens.

What. The. Fuck.
Oh, it's bits, not bytes. So that is only 3MB/s.

K. I don't care.
Could be your modem dying, my old modem used to cut out every few hours for about 5 minutes, the virgin media guy came and checked it and said it was fine, but after i persuaded him to replace it we didn't get the problem again.
I've heard a few bad things about SBC lately (In the past few weeks)
Could be that they're just having technical problems.
You could always try calling them, but first try disabling the wireless feature on your router, to see if someone's using your internet for P2P.
Hey, OP is my brother. We live in the same house.
I know for sure that it is one of my PCs. I even switched routers and everything was fine, its just that my other router needs to be configured properly and my parents were using the internet so I didn't have time to tinker with it.
I turned off all PCs except mine, and I got full connectivity and a ping of 29. So I'm pretty sure theres a background process going on, on one of my desktops that isn't supposed to be.

There's a function on most routers that allows you to see or measure the bandwidth rates/usages on each connection through it.
You can use that to find out which of the computers are using heavy ammounts of bandwidth
So wait, how much routers do you guys use? Maybe one of them is bottlenecking another, due to firewall settings or such(experienced the same with my old router and a turned on firewall, had a ping over 500ms).
Also, see if you can make a quick sketch in paint of the layout of your network.
Or maybe there is some bit torrent going on. that will murder your ping and network speeds.
Just saying if anyone on the network is using bit torrent, that it will cause terrible speedtest.net results and flood your network and cause massive ping.
before replacing hardware just check that your ping is bad when the other computers are turned off
