Something happened that I didn't think was possible. I was folding some laundry with my headphones on and got a static shock that I heard through the headphones, and then the audio cut out in the right channel. I have some really sturdy Sennheiser HD 558 headphones that've lasted years, and after a bit of testing on different jacks I've found that they're still working fine. My soundcard is also still working, except the right channel just doesn't work with these specific headphones. Sound works fine on 2 other pairs of headphones that I tried. The only difference is the HD 558s have a 1/4" plug with an included 3.5mm adapter

I'm using a Soundblaster Audigy, and I tried it in another PCI slot but it still didn't work with the 558s. Is there a big enough difference in the 1/4"-3.5mm adapter to make it somehow not work anymore?
Have you tried onboard mobo audio? (Unless you have a soundcard because your mobo doesnt have onboard HD audio??)
If it works perfectly fine then something weird is going on
If the headphones test fine elsewhere and the sound card has a working right channel on other devices then I can't think of any reason why one specific set of headphones would no longer have a working right channel.

It's working fine with onboard sound, I'm using it right now.

That's exactly what's going on and I'm so confused. The headphones that work don't have the 3.5mm adapter attached so I can only guess that's part of the problem
Fiddle with the plug. Twist it in the socket and flex the strain relief.

Are both channels working separately? Like you can pan to each ear separately on purpose?
See if you can get a replacement adapter. Since bizarre that static would affect it, but its worth a try and their cheap. It might also be not getting good contact too. I have 598's and the included 3.5 mm adapter can get a bit tight so I have to shove it a bit.
EDIT: Pentium beat me to it.
Yeah I fiddled with the plug and the adapter and just can't get the right channel working, but it works immediately when I plug into the onboard sound. When I tested the speaker configuration in the windows settings, I could hear the chime on the right channel, but the sound was low and distorted. Sounds normal in other headphones. I might have to try another adapter

Yeah that just sounds like bad contact. Fortunately that's an easy fix.
Is it normal for it to only affect adapters? I can only assume it's a bad contact on the soundcard because my 558 still work on the front port with onboard sound. I just put the soundcard back in, disabled onboard in bios and turned the left channel off. Right channel is there but low and distorted. Again, only low on the 558s and not other headphones.
I've been wanting to replace my soundcard for awhile now, do you think the next one would work fine or is it just be the adapter?
I'll see if I can pick up a new soundcard and adapter tomorrow to test both
Alright I got a new adapter and a new soundcard. Tested the headphones with the new adapter on the old soundcard, still broken. New soundcard works with both adapters. Still dunno how that works
Be careful with those 1/4 to 3.5mm adapters. The leverage created by them can rip your port out if you forget you have your headphones on.
Wrap the end around something, or consider one of these

My recommended adapter. It seems kind of expensive but it's the best one on the market. I run one of these with my JVC studio headphones. Showing no signs of wear after like a year of service whereas the other corded adapters I tried wore out pretty quickly.
