• Best Linux distro for a headless FTP server?

I just need an FTP distro as small as possible, installable to USB would be nice, and easy to setup/install/maintain. System specs: Pentium 4 @1.6GHz 384MB PC133 Dual NICs (One onboard intel, one a 3com card) (PCI Matrox video card, not needed after setup) Thanks guys! :h:
-forget what I said I shouldn't be giving linux advice-
You could try ubuntu server edition. IIRC, it has a nice "setup an ftp server for me" button

It doesn't have a GUI by default. Generally speaking it should be pretty light. Then again, server distros aren't aiming at being as light as possible. It's stability that matters.
Arch
Does Arch have an easy to setup FTP package? I'm pretty good at a terminal, and following guides and walkthroughs if anyone has some for setting up an Arch FTP server. I think it would be ideal for what I need.

I have Ubuntu Server 10.04 running nicely on a headless 256mb, 500mhz box running both a vpn client stack, samba, and several other services. It'll handle VSFTPD fine.
Well I just setup Ubuntu Server 11.04 with Samba. Installed a wireless PCI card, got it online, and installing LXDE. So far, everything is painless. :3

Thanks for pointing out FreeNAS. I didn't know it supported ftp. I'd say you could give it a shot. I've heard a lot of good things about it. It also seems to be less trouble and overhead than ubuntu.
Debian, uses less than 200MB as a foot print, uses minimal CPU, stable as hell, has apt-get, and is a full Linux Distro unlike FreeNAS.

The mullti-DVD downloads had me a bit worried that Debian was blotated, but I'll give it spin. :3 I have a 15GB HDD. But the 384MB of RAM is what concerns me the most. The P4 CPU is clocked at 1.8GHz, perfect for this server. :3

The rest are just extra packages that some people might want to install without needing an internet connection. There are smaller install discs for net installs and stuff too.
I'm running an FTP+SSH+VNC (with LXDE) server on a PIII 1GHz with 384MB with Debian, with your configuration you can run Debian without any problems. :keke:
