So I saved up some money and have some to spare for an SSD or two. Currently looking at
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211419 X2 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820250001
I want to go the RAID 0 on 2 30~gb drives but any upcoming releases or things I should look for instead?
Question, is an SSD really that much of a performance booster as they're made out to be?
Yeah, honestly from seeing my friends' rig with an SSD there is a difference
Hmmm well I have $200 to blow after purchasing a Z-5500 surround sound system, looks like I'll be taking whatever you settle on. Thanks mate.

It boosts bootup times.
It boosts bootup times.
Mmm, tasty... for some people.
Honestly, IDK too much when my PC boots up, as long as it does boot up, I'm kay.
who actually shuts down their PC. i'd leave it running 24/7 or at the most put it on standy

I turn mine off at night because it gets very warm if I leave it on.
SSD's are good for making computers snappier for every day tasks, CPU and RAM can only go so far for that.
ramdisks are where it's at
I thought the title said 'help me blow $200 for SSD's'.
And I was like :wtc:.
Those two SSD's suck OP, get one of these instead:
OCZ Vertex 2 50GB
Or the Corsair Force drive that Odellius suggested as they are both the same drive, except the Corsair one wont be getting any updates to its firmware, so the OCZ is the better choice.
$200 will get you a small down payment on a good SLC SSD... MLC is crap... cheap crap.

lol now people are not only mispronouncing my name as Odellius, but they're even spelling it out like that as well

Im so sorry, I hope I haven't offended you by putting an I in your name, I hope our friendship can continue, I believe it is strong enough to endure this small speed-bump on our road of friendhood.
OP, Just a heads up incase you're on Win 7 and looking forward to TRIM support - it doesn't work in RAID0 (sucks I know).

Err FYI: TRIM Support doesn't work in RAID on any windows...
sucks that you can't have something active like TRIM, but there are tools which basically format the drive to its original state
Err FYI: TRIM Support doesn't work in RAID on any windows...
True, I concede that, but if I wanted to be pedantic I'd say only Win 7 (and Win Server 2008 R2 if I wanted to be truly pedantic!) offer true TRIM support, the others are just utilities put together by the drive vendors to send some/all TRIM commands on the OS' behalf.
But yeah, either way - it sucks, your array will be superfucking quick at first then slowly degrade over time without TRIM, but as Odellus rightly points out, there are tools to compensate for that.
Rumours abound that there will be some drives running the new Sandforce controller being capable of saturating the new SATA interface in Q3 so you could consider waiting for a single one of those?
I think I am just going to get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820250001&cm_re=64gb_ssd-_-20-250-001-_-Product
Since you liked the speed of your friends SSD. Ever think of asking him which one he uses?
Hm, this thread got me thinking. Then I looked at the prices of SSDs vs HDDs: $4k for a SSD 1TB and $60 for a 1TB HDD.
I'm fine with HDDs.

At least until SSDs are cheap like HDDs.

Some people like the performance of the SSD. It is actually quite noticeable in boot up, application load, and seeking for a file.
4K for 1TB ($4/GB, wtf?) is a bit overboard. With mechanical HDDs, you might not have the best r/w speeds, but you get more bang for your buck. Seeing how 1TB drives have been going for around $80 (What does that even equate too? ~8cents per GB?) You can buy atleast 10 1TB drives, to even come close to a SSD. they're just not practical.
Sure they're fast, sure they're a bit more reliable. But in the long run, they die quicker and you pay much more.

well, it's cheaper than the Sandforce for a reason
although I don't understand the TRIM part?
Those SSD's are pretty poor, sure their cheap but why would you buy two cheap ones when for the same amount you could buy one decent one?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167023&cm_re=intel_ssd-_-20-167-023-_-Product X2
Save up and buy that, trust me, better to wait longer and get high quality hardware, than to spend up on slow/crappy stuff.
A single 80GB Intel X25-M G2 is my suggestion.
I have a pair personally and they do their job great. (Would have gotten a single 160GB though if I could, but they were limited supply at the time.)
who actually shuts down their PC. i'd leave it running 24/7 or at the most put it on standy
I leave mine on because linux is decently stable

imo save up a bit and get two of those hybrid drives that Seagate makes and raid those bitches.
