Hey guys. First and foremost, I absolutely suck when it comes to my monitor knowledgebase. I barely know anything other than the difference between DVI, HDMI, and VGA. That being said, could you guys throw in some suggestions for the absolute best monitors that can be had for under 170$ USD? I am hoping to find a great monitor around 150-160$, but 170$ is okay if it is absolutely worth it. Main "wants": 22 inches or larger widescreen 1080P/full HD is a must Beautiful, vibrant color display EXCELLENT contrast and not too thick, so I can nicely mount it on things I really appreciate any input given, so thanks to everyone in advance. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] Also, my graphics card (fx5500 256mb AGP) can only display at maximum 1280 x 1024, so can someone explain what I need to know about compatibility with resolutions?
You cannot have 1080p (1080p = 1920 x 1080) with a maximum resultion of 1280 x 1024 .. With a 22" monitor u dont have to use the maximum resultion on the Monitor u can use a lower one and with a price limit at 160 $ u cant req much i suggest u LG Flatron W2442PA-SF

It looks nice though! Thank you anyway :D

So, I can still correctly display a picture without the text blurring and blurriness that I hear people talking about, without using the monitors top resolution? And will it still fill the screen entirely in a widescreen aspect ratio at reduced resolution?
Mind telling what you are hoping to actually achieve with the monitor? Because I am having extreme doubts that you could actually play 1080p video on your machine, guessing by the GPU.
Mind telling what you are hoping to actually achieve with the monitor? Also the 1080p will come in handy once I purchase a new computer setup with a more modern graphics card. I do plan on watching movies via both the computer as well as consoles and what have you. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] How about the samsung 2333t? a bit more expensive but is it a good choice?
Your GPU won't handle anything above 10 FPS on that resolution. Maybe just buy the monitor the same time as you upgrade/build your PC perhaps?
Your GPU won't handle anything above 10 FPS on that resolution. Maybe just buy the monitor the same time as you upgrade/build your PC perhaps?
What resolution will it be able to handle?
What resolution will it be able to handle?
Well, what are you gaming at right now? It should be buckling at 1280x1024, unless you like to play older games.
How about the samsung 2333t? a bit more expensive but is it a good choice?
I have a 2333w, which looks to be a very similar monitor and I cannot fault it yet. The colours seem fine, it's bright enough, seems fairly well built (the top casing on mine seems to have buckled somehow).
Well, what are you gaming at right now? It should be buckling at 1280x1024, unless you like to play older games.
Right now I play CS:S and Flight Simulator 2004. I do not mind playing at 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. At average I get around 15-29FPS, which is noticeably slow, but still playable. I hope to find out what I could get out of the monitor in this situation, not what i can't get :P [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] My only concern is an 8ms response time for the 2333t. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] I think I found something. Does this look like an acceptable purchase? The guy seems like he has good reviews. If I scale things down to 800 x 600, will it perform exactly the same way as it did with a CRT monitor, whilst still filling up the screen in a correct aspect ratio? http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-226BW-22-inch-LCD-Monitor-/110655212596?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item19c3908c34 Or how about this http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-T220-22-inch-LCD-Monitor-Touch-Color-/220751606709?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item3365d233b5
I'm sure you can have a higher resolution than 1280 x 1024 on that card. You're probably looking at the current monitor's supported resolution.
If I scale things down to 800 x 600, will it perform exactly the same way as it did with a CRT monitor, whilst still filling up the screen in a correct aspect ratio?
While LCDs will generally get the aspect ratio right, 800x600 will look awful on any decent size LCD compared to how it looks on your CRT currently.
what about 1024 x 768 or whatever the first 1024 setting is in CS:S? would that scale properly and look atleast half decent? Basically I'm looking for "decent" for my pc gaming (for now), and excellent with console and dvd/bluray entertainment. Does 1080p make a big or even noticeable difference in any way in a monitor around 20-24 inches?

Your card supports up to 2048x1536, you would be fine with just about any monitor available right now.
If you aren't going to play games with it at the native resolution, don't even bother buying it. Save your money for a new GPU.
no save it for a new PC. He has AGP.
no save it for a new PC. I have a rig like that and while the gpu is fine the processor is a huge bottleneck. So I would say save for a new computer and get a new monitor when you get a new computer because it will look like ass with 800x600 on a monitor like that.

In fact I think any power requirement above whatever the fx5500 is, will result in the card not working. But thank you, I appreciate it greatly. If I were to use my current GPU, and play movies at full HD resolution, as well as do normal computing (no gaming), will the following monitor in the link below cause any issues? Or will it play and do stuff at full hd/non hd high res just fine? Like I said, I really don't mind not playing games for a while, I just need desk space and a bigger monitor to get more out of my audio studio setup...more mixer tracks and recording tracks on screen etc http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236100
There shouldn't be any problems with that monitor.
There shouldn't be any problems with that monitor.
So with my shitty computer and gpu, so long as im not playing a game and im just doing regular tasks, ill still be good to go?
