Hey! I'm currently running Vista 36 bit and i was wondering about switching to Windows 7. I recently found out that my mother has magnificent discounts due to teaching, and can get it for 40 bucks.
This computer is used mostly for games on steam and Minecraft, and I was wondering if the switch would keep everything and be compatible.
This is my first time adding a new OS, so do you have other general tips?
I'll post the specs once I get them.

Everything will work as in Vista, if not better

I think that's really it then! Quick question. Is there any danger of there being some files lost in the transition, even a remote chance?

It will save all files in a folder called ''Windows.old''.

Yeah this
Depends on how you install, if you do custom install, I think everything just dissappears, but if you choose upgrade, files will be kept

Oh i think this will happen on custom, nvm
Is it still all organized, then? I mean, all the stuff from program files would be in windows.old/programfiles? Or all my pictures in windows.old/users/John/pictures?

Yep.
Everything from C:\ will be in C:\Windows.old
That's really all of my questions answered. This can die, be locked, or whatever. Thanks a lot, guys!
40 DOLLARS! I'll pay you 50 for it!
Hey, Chez... If you really want to upgrade, but you're not sure, you know Microsoft released a tool to test if you can?
It's called the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, and it's a free download for genuine windows on their website. It'll tell you of any problems or incompatibilities may arise as the result of upgrading.
If you can run Windows Vista, you can run Windows 7.
I can run it fine on my dual core, so no worries there.
For the most part (99.99% of the time), any programs that worked on Vista will work on Windows 7.

That is only if he does a full install of Windows 7. I have upgraded my Vista to 7 (Keeping all the files) and it didn't create any Windows.old. Everything was the same, just that the OS was upgraded.
Switch down to XP! EDIT: To below post, i was being serious
XP? Fuck that, 3.1 is where it's at!

Well, when you do move to 7, say 'Good riddance.'
