• What is the realistic chance of being "hacked."

No, I don't mean having your Facebook stolen, or people reading your emails. Hypothetically, if there WAS a person(s) wanting to get into my computers and they DID have the knowledge to do so. What are the chances that they would succeed? And what should I do to better protect myself beyond antivirus, and other such protections can offer?

You don't need AV's, well, if you see a file named ''tf2haxwallhaxlolbbq'' its quite obvious that file is not anything good. My advice is, if you ever download anything beyond reality, like you go on an forum dedicated to game hacking, and there is an thread ''Steam game adder'' its also, obviously fake, to add games, you need to be in the Steam database, and if someone was able to get in, he would never publicly release anything like that. Just try to keep your head cool, and think about what your planning to open.
I personally think the chances are next to none. Hackers hack for fun most of the time. So they need a challenge. edit: Above user gives good advice. Don't fall for the hack schemes. Hackers are a tightly knit group. They usually don't release their stuff. And to keep leechers away they use viruses and shit.

Skids hack to have fun, ''Hackers'' hack to get profit of what they did. (Money, accounts, etc) Hackers don't want any challenge, the easier it is, the better it is for them, would you rather do a challenging job of 8 hours a day and earn $900 a month, or do a job which is easy and earn $5000 a month? At least, thats from my point of view, if there was something really easy, and it gets you most money, I would do that instead of something challenging :S.
Hackers hack for fun. Crackers hack for other reasons.
Hackers hack for fun. Crackers hack for other reasons.
Give some back up, what you said is totally non-sense.
im on hatashi's side here
Say I pissed off someone that is a great programmer. What do? Could they mess up my stuff without me downloading it? This hypothetical hacker does not have access to my local network. And this hypothetical hacker isn't hypothetical at all, he's real. I don't really think he could pull it off, but I find it pays to be prepared.
Hackers hack for fun. Crackers hack for other reasons.
This is what I've always been told. Hackers are the good guys, and crackers are the bad guys, basically. At least, that's what my dad, and a bunch of his friends have believed for years, and told me one day.

He can get your IP if you emailed him, for example, if he got your email he opens the source and looks below the headers. Thats basically the only thing he can do to you... But he won't because to DDoS a network you need a strong botnet, and he won't be bothered of making one or wasting time actually do it to get 1 person from the Internet.
Even then I could reset the router and change my IP? Or call the ISP?
Even then I could reset the router and change my IP? Or call the ISP?
Yeah, thats all. If he does DDoS you, you can put some legal charges against him, (If you're running an server for like an company that is :P).

That's stealing account info.
The people who have the ability/knowledge to actually hack, that is, to remotely access your computer and do whatever they wish with it, won't be targeting some random person on the internet.
Q: Would it be possible to hack someone SO IMPORTANT that a whole state could economically fail?
Obama
None, you're not important nor are you stupid(Hopefully).
IF I was to ever hack somebody I'd open up a notepad and copy pasta some instructions on how not to get their dumb asses hacked just to laugh at them. :3
Get a stream from their webcam first though to see their reaction.
