I love the game, but I stopped playing after several updates required me to completely start a new character.

Uhm, what? that isn't even remotely true. There's 2 permanent leagues that have been there since the launch. The 3 month temp leagues end, and the 1 months etc etc but those characters a moved to the perm leagues.
The only thing you might have to re-do is your skill tree when they update it.
