This is what my mom got me for "late" christmas gift tonight. I was truly stunned for a second, surely she knew how much I loved my Sennheiser HD280's. Instead of taking the gift as an insult, I smiled and said "thank you", putting the flimsy plastic package aside.
Once the presents were completely handed out, I went to my room to finally test these devices I had so long made fun of, after reading countless "Should I buy these SkullCandys" threads that pop up on here once inawhile. Here is my thoughts on them, I will be making comparisons to my $80 HD280's, since im sure facepunch is familiar with the quality and brand.
Build quality
Well, for the SkullCandys it didn't start well. The plastic that hold the headphones together is cheap and flimsy, and compared to the HD280's ABS plastic the SkullCandys didn't feel nearly as solid.
What did get high points were the cushions and cord. They don't help hold the device together, but atheistics were nice and comfortable, the HD280's are comfortable but they aren't as nice looking or as nice to feel (Tho this is a very minor point).
The cord though, oh god..... How I wished the SkullCandys threaded cord was on the HD280's instead of the old-school/cumbersome slinky cord the HD280's have. If anyone knows of some high quality headphones with this kind of cord or similar please show me them.
I notice that the ear cuffs are made of that material you find on the EVO or cr-48. Feels really sexy, wish other devices used it.
Sound quality
Here we go, I was so ready to expect shitty Ipod-quality screeches to fill my head. For this experiment, I used the new Facepunch Collaborative CD (http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1054214-Facepunch-Collaborative-CD-RELEASE) and some of my personal favorite songs.
What I found out was the SkullCandys were perfectly exceptional. They surprised me with how much bass they could handle and pump out. Although they weren't nearly as good as my Sennheisers in blocking out noise, bass quality, or loudness, these headphones were actually pretty good for $40.
Conclusion
So what do I think now? Are SkullCandy's shit?
Yes and no, I think for the $40 you could do alot worse. While the build quality isn't particularly good, the sound quality is actually not bad and will be fine for normal people on a budget. Now for the audiophile these headphones are clearly unexceptable. This is why i'm sticking with my HD280's still, but I wont mind using my SkullCandy's as a back-up or alternative.
I think at this point SkullCandy's are an exceptional headphone. I also think that most of the hate towards this brand is the people who buy these and ridiculousness these headphones can look. Though today I can now see that there is some credibility behind these cans.
They're okay if you don't have money to spend on headphones.
Just avoid their earbuds.

Eh, I figured either way I be wrong.
Looks like i'm also getting rated dumb for this too. How dare I make a comparison and provide positives to the enemy.

it would be skullcandys. if it weren't a proper noun you would be right

See that's what I figured. Though i'm surprised no one has pointed out I never mention HESH or whatever the shit the types are.
Aren't these pretty much for kids who listen to Lil Wayne or Deadmau5?

why are you putting lil wayne and deadmau5 in the same category?
Bass isn't sound quality, OP. Neither is loudness. Loudness has hardly anything to do with the quality of headphones, really. You can get an amp if you can't drive the headphones properly.

This is not a review for audiophiles. This is a comparison highlighting the points that I mainly see people complain about. Alot of people complain about the ipod-headphone Bass they produce and how they can't maintain clarity at loud noises. These headphones aren't worth me digging into High, mid's, and low's and such.
The gaudy looks will keep me away from them no matter how "Decent" they sound.

Main stream bull shit now.

buy the plain black ones then
Nice to know they have a couple of redeeming qualities.

They're still unnecessarily big and glossy though dude.
I got a pair of Sony headphones at Best Buy for 25 dollars, that sounds exactly the same as skullcandy, and lasted longer than a week, unlike skullcandy.

hurr durr everybody listens to it it must be shit
Honestly you hardly seem like an 'audiophile'. I'm not either, but you should know that you can easily replace cords on headphones, if you want a threaded cord, put one on your HD280. HD280 aren't even that great of a value in the first place, there are much better options for the price of them. They have little bass (since this seems important to you), and I'd suggest HD555, SR60, SR80 or HD448 instead.

I wouldn't suggest a single one of them for "bass". Either the AudioTechnica M50's or the Sony XB-700's are my choice (also a couple of others good ones such as the Denon D2000's) , both have very good non-muddy bass, a good soundstage and both have good non-recessed highs and mids. The XB-700's sound amazing to my ears paired with a Fiio E7 DAC/Amp.
-Edit- Oh dear, I misread your post. I agree that if you want "little bass" then those headphones are good.
No, I was saying HD280 have little bass, and I didn't specify about the others, I just was saying they were a better value, in my opinion.

The rasta-style is cool, but it makes you look like a douche if you actually wear them.
Never buy Skullcandy earbuds. I bought a $60 pair, Jackhammers or some shit, and they blew in the first minute of use.
Just avoid their earbuds.
Why? The sound quality is great for the price. The only issue I had with them so far is that the cord gets tangled really easily.

They're both mainstream trash so I can see the relation.

oh you're back, whoopee.
Wow, you guys hate on every single thing mainstream, ever. Also, Lil Wayne is not to be compared with scum such as Deadmau5.

You've got it backwards.
Affairs with Skullcandys always leave me with groin pains and herpes.
RIP my Sennheisers. I have to use iPod earbuds till I can get some new ones. Gah. I would not go near these Skullcandy/candies though.
My Sennheiser HD595 saw me reading this thread and broke up with me. Thought I was also having an affair with this whore :C
