I loved it and 2nd Offense. For some reason I played them a lot more than Twisted Metal.
The levels, and how interactive they were really stood out in comparison with Twisted Metal. I can't remember which one it was, but the Cape Canaveral level was great. Meteor Crater was pretty fun too, with the ability to summon a giant ant.

Yeah being able to blow up the world around you is what made it so much fun.
I also liked playing as the Ayyy because ramming at full speed did a lot of damage
i'm loving the whole 70's vibe of this game
Something that just occurred to me: Beezwax had the potential to be the Sweet Tooth/Needles Kane of Vigilante 8 [sp]had he not been killed off in Vigilante 8[/sp]. A crazed bee keeper with a hive of mutant bees blowing shit up is sort of up there with a insane murderous clown.
Our N64 came with V8 but the controls are very poor. It was hard for me to get into the game. Maybe I should try again?

The controls are definitely awful. It feels like you're controlling a baby Mr Bean who only has pool noodles and elastic jump ropes with which to operate the vehicle.
Like any game with shitty controls though, you do adapt. Steering a half-second in advance pretty quickly becomes second nature, and after a few minutes you're in a position to have some proper fun
That series was one of my favorites by far. I love Arizona(?) in second offense where you could spawn the giant mutant ant that shoots lasers. Actually, I loved all the maps interactive side-objectives.
One thing vigilante 8 did right was the alt-fire for the weapons. Like ^^^ was turbo for the missiles or vvv made a crater with the cannon. I love attaching the road runner missiles to people over and over and watch them fly away.
To be honest, I never had problems with PS1 version of V8, and always enjoyed it. Vehicles felt about right for controls, and didn't do whacky loops like Twisted Metal tends to fall into. However, N64 version was just overall... well, poor, in comparison.
I'd love to play V8 Second Offense on a modern format, HD and such more than anything... that level with the meteor and giant ants, the truck with the MOVE-EM-OUT horn. Everything in that game was pure fun. These were some fantastic games, sooo many hours spent on these with my friends.
And those framerates. Oh lord those framerates.
what about that v8 remake on x360?
A little detail I liked about Second Offense was that you could actually participate in the Winter Not Olympics in a way. If you successfully did the slalom course and other parts powerups tied to how you did would appear on the winner's podium.
The Dreamcast port of 2nd Offense was great- you could do 4-player split-screen with 60fps and get all the first game's levels with a cheat code.
I managed to find myself a copy again recently, it's still fun.

Gonna have to find a copy of that, too. Our dreamcast has been a House of the Dead 2 and Skies of Arcadia machine and nothing else so far.
