How do I know if my Graphics card is compatible with my motherboard?
14 replies, posted
This is my first time building a computer, and the online manual for my motherboard told me to check the manufacturer's site to see if the graphics card is compatible with my motherboard. However, on checking their site, I found that there was no compatibility list.
I know the graphics card is PCI-e 2.0 x16, and that my motherboard has slots for it.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, I just don't want to mess up.
yes, they are
5770 for the same price

it's compatible, but you're better off posting your entire build on fp so we can critique it
any PCI-E x16 card will fit in a PCI-E x16 slot
really the only compatibility problems are any bottlenecking with your CPU and whether your PSU is up to the task

and yeah just post the entire build

For 20$ less actually :3:
Also you may need a bigger PSU too
So when they said "check to see if it's compatible" they meant hardware-wise, not firmware/drivers/w.e?
Also, my build.

I didn't include stuff like the CD-RW drive or the monitor because it wasn't really necessary to put them in there. I also have a thermal compound, plus a keyboard and mouse.
Another question: should I get a better heat sink than the one AMD provides with the CPU?
And another one. The motherboard doesn't say that it can support PCI-E 2.1 x16. Should I still go for the graphics card Yumyumbubblegum suggested?
Edit: I think I got the PSU wrong(I'm on another computer right now), but it's pretty much the same thing. I used the same criteria to search for it.
EDIT2: Shit, I knew I forgot something. I'm going to use Windows 7 64bit home premium.(OEM)

This mobo has TWO PCI-E slots, it will support it fine.
the 965 is basically a very slightly overclocked 955, not enough to be noticeable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&cm_re=955-_-19-103-808-_-Product
if this build is just for gaming or something, not very RAM heavy tasks, use this RAM instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227483

better card for the same price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131328&cm_re=5770-_-14-131-328-_-Product
excellent case to consider http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147120&cm_re=smart_one-_-11-147-120-_-Product
better, cheaper PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341016&Tpk=modxstream%20500W

you only need a better heatsink if you intend to overclock
I'd spend less on the motherboard, ram, and PSU, and apply that savings towards a 5850.
Almost $200 on a motherboard, 8gb in ram, and a 650W PSU but paired with a 57xx class card? Why?
What's your opinion on this Graphics Card?

Very nice.
Just another question. I'm buying an OEM disk drive. Will it already have all the stuff it needs to install my OS, or do I need to put it on another computer and update it?

what
[editline]11:00PM[/editline]
do you mean harddrive? either way no, your motherboard should come with enough sata cables for your harddrive and cd-rom drive

Yes, Just change the Boot Timings in the Bios
Go to the BIOS on POST Start up (Usual key is DEL)
Go to Advanced Set-up
Change First Boot from HDD to DVD/CD
Save and Restart
Then when it prompts you to boot the disc. You boot it.

Looks like a good deal to me.
One thing, if you need the more advanced features of that motherboard or if you DON'T need a more powerful vidcard than a 5750, then go with your original setup.
I'm assuming that a guy who picks a $200 motherboard and 8gb of ram has high expectations on gaming performance- well, a $100 motherboard, 4gb of ram and a 5850 will give you way better performance.
Take a look at this article. It involves Intel quad cores, but that's not what's significant.
Look at the settings/resolution/framerate of the different classes of cards. You'll see that the 5850 gets you playable framerate at settings that the 5770(faster than the 5750) sometimes really struggles with.
