I'm working on someone's computer in my tech class. They managed to infect themselves with one of the nastiest fake antivirus infections I've come across, and navigating the system is near impossible. Windows Explorer crashes on start up, and takes another hour or so to restart. I want to reformat the system, but the BIOS has a password on it. The user can't remember it, and hasn't got it recorded anywhere. I need to know if there's a utility to show the BIOS password. It's an IBM Thinkpad laptop.
Thanks for your time, and I'll be happy to answer any additional questions.
Give this a read - http://www.topbits.com/reset-ibm-thinkpad-bios-password.html
Is there a method that won't require me to purchase anything?
You could try removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes but Thinkpad passwords are notoriously difficult to reset. Try giving this a read too - http://www.plasma-online.de/index.html?content=http%3A//www.plasma-online.de/english/help/solutions/bios_password_ibm.html
I see. Thank you for your help.
If this hasn't been resolved yet, you could also take the laptop hard drive out and hook it up to a desktop and scan it. I have had to do that quite a bit because my idiot friends always get infected...

How is this bad reading. Yes I realize that he wants to reformat, and that he would need to find the BIOS password, but the core problem is
They managed to infect themselves with one of the nastiest fake antivirus infections I've come across, and navigating the system is near impossible.
I would think the ability to clean the infection and save the files would be better than a complete wipe.
Resetting CMOS will not help at all because the BOIS password is sotred somewhere that is pretty fuking impossible to reset. I once had an IBM thinkpad and I set the password and then forgot it :downs: But I quickly found out that that ment you where quite fucked.
I discussed removing the BIOS with the guy, and he didn't want to. Windows Media Player still worked, and all he wanted to do with the machine was watch movies, so he took it back. Thanks for your input guys.
