• i5 with stock cooler gets to 100 degrees

My i5 with the stock cooler gets to 100 degrees during gaming, during very standard operation it rests at around 45-50. As I have just learned, this is very, very, very bad. Obviously the stock cooler is worthless. Can anyone recommend a good CPU cooler? Since I'm Australian, www.centrecom.com.au is appreciated. Thanks.
That's not bad for a stock cooler, your processor should be fine with those temps. I always try to get them below 40c; Here's a good heatsink, it should keep it below 40c on full load! http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=75&products_id=21368

I just took off the heatsink, looks awesome doesn't it.. This is what I use on my i7 build, it also has mounts for the i5: http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=75&products_id=42496 Seems a bit pricey in Australia, I got mine for $45 on sale at Amazon. Great cooler, but not really worth $100 with shipping... To answer your above post: That cooler is great but I have a lot of problems with those damn clips, they always break on me. Just be really gentle. As for the cooling paste, yep that's the stuff to get!
How much damage would I have caused to the CPU so far? If any? I've been using the computer for about a week now. It's probably been at those high temperatures frequently.. Anything to worry about? There has been no indication of failure of any kind, I was playing MW2 perfectly well when I decided to open up speed-fan and check it out.
You just broke contact between the cpu and the heatsink, I recommend you to reapply the thermal paste or it will get a little hotter now. The current thermal paste is almost useless now after you took off the heatsink.
I don't happen to have any thermal paste on me, I just used the stuff that came on the stock cooler.. I'll be out of town for a few days, so I'll just put it back the way it was to prevent dust from getting in. Will the computer be usable at all? If not, I'll just put it back in and leave it on my desk, unplugged..
your cooler is definitely is defective, or you didn't put it on right. I idle 33 and load 64 max
Just try to put it back on again. Chances are that you put it on wrong the first time and it didn't get enough contact with CPU. That happened to me and my i7 (My temps reached up to 80'C idle) Aw fuck, got ninja'd.
Looks more like the corner pushpin just hanged on without snapping.
How do you know that? I never liked those push pins kinda coolers. To me, screws are more secure and such.
I put the heatsink back exactly the same way, but this time pushing in the pins two at a time, diagonally. It's 28 in the room. When abusing cortex command to the point where it visibly lags, the temperatures rise, but not above 65 - 75
So it didn't make contact with the CPU. Looks like your problems are solved.
Also use HWMonitor instead, more accurate.
Those temps look fine to me. Remember, it's just a stocked cooler so don't expect it to be super awesome.
Do you think it's still worth the $40 to get the new cooler?
I would say yes. If you keep your parts cooler then in theory they would last longer. If you're interested in paying a little more to keep your pieces cool then get this. http://www.spotit.com.au/items.aspx?id=31652 My friend has that and he payed the same price. He said that he gladly payed for it.

Yeah that wasn't put on right at all. Even the lower temps you're getting now are higher than normal. I definitely suggest removing the heat sink, taking off and reapplying the thermal paste completely, and then putting on the heat sink again. The stock cooler isn't especially good, but it should be running way cooler than it is right now.

If you're willing to pay for it, I'd say get a ZALMAN CNPS 10X Extreme and a small tube of AS5
Clean off the heatsink/cpu and re-apply thermal paste. [editline]04:40PM[/editline] You won't have to buy a new cooler, just thermal paste.
