Anyone have any suggestions for good screen capturing software?

Hi there,
I am a test analyst who does a lot of work with user acceptance testing.
This work basically involves testing online portals, logging every step, to see whether or not things work.
I need to capture screenshots of each step as I go. Right now I screenshot every step and paste them into a word document. This takes a long time when working with complex test scripts.
Can anyone suggest free screen capturing software that could be downloaded where I can simply press a key or something easy that will save screenshots to a single document as well as video capture the screen if need be?
If anyone knows of anything or has experience with screen capturing software, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys
Alt+Print Screen just captures the current window and not everything else on the screen. You could also use Snipping Tool. Snipping Tool isn't as simple as pressing a key, but it's pretty quick.
Go to run and type psr.exe. It's a built in step recorder and honestly a fantastic program. It unfortunately does not have video capture though.

It takes a screenshot of the window whenever you click, and it says where you click and highlights it. It displays it all in a step by step basis after.
Yeah I have used the snipping tool. I find that Alt+Printscreen does pretty much what I want and is faster when putting it into a word document.
I've looked far and wide but can't seem to find any software that allows me to simply click a button and automatically save pictures within one .doc or .pdf or whatever. Does such a thing exist? Because it would be super useful. Taking hundreds of screenshots and pasting into word documents can be very time consuming when there is a large number of test scripts.
Having the ability to video capture if needed would be a huge bonus, too.

This is very cool!
Is there any way to make it only screenshot specific windows, or will it always be the entire display?

I'm not entirely sure. I haven't used it too much myself.

also im not surprised ShareX was recommended right off the bat.
It is literally the best tool I've ever seen(I was also recommended ShareX after Puu.sh got awful)
Because step recorder is probably the best feature Windows has ever had but not advertised.

What a crying shame.

guess we'll need those actions or word does bugger all support
That's such a shame because that's nearly exactly what I want.
A simple program where I can do something like press alt+print screen to capture the current window, but also have the ability to highlight specific sections and add comments all outputting into a single document is exactly what I need. Added bonus for video recording where it just saves the video file so i can combine them in a zip or something would be a dream.

I also work for the government, which is an added difficulty. It can be really hard to get certain software access authorised, especially paid software or software where you need to have an account.
Thus the need for it to be free and pretty straight forward.
Bandicam is really nice but it's 30$
and at that point you might as well get OBS since its free
obs does do window capture
For some reason I had a bunch of issues with OBS artifact and could never solve it myself or find an answer online
like?
Moving elements would always artifact
There could be a way to input a captured screenshot into a program, but that's a bit too advanced for me.
You can open shit with any program if you add it to the interface
I just used one that already exists
Kiwi's open in image editor is not the solution, as it's opening inside the inbuilt and non modifyable greenshot editor.

Whereas you can make a workflow that opens a file with your desired program

Close Enough?

I changed the destination output to a folder on my desktop, which will only be filled with images from a custom workflow
Winword's multi selection file opener actually assists in this greatly, as you can Ctrl+A the entire folder, as long as you clear it out between each session
