basically, i have a small nightstand i like to leave my laptop on. until i get new batteries its always gonna be there. There is a phone jack about a foot away from it. Can i connect the phone jack and somehow get the laptop to act as a house phone?

There are services you can use that make it so your computer acts as a phone and it uses internet instead of a phone line. Bad thing is, it costs money.
Skype services is one of the more known ones to use. It's not too terribly expensive.
Other then that, I have no idea.
Skype is cheaper then most landlines isn't it?
i mean like someone calls my house and my computer gets like a popup and i can answer it or ignore it ect
Windows includes a program called dialer that can make and receive phone calls.
