They are far from beating WoW.
Thought, WoW is dieing. They may beat it one day.

WoW is sitting at about 5 million, this is about the same.

Wow has about 5mil ACTIVE accounts , whereas this has 5 million accounts overall. Still very impressive.
Shame I'm not into Final Fantasy or I'd grab this.
Plus I prefer WoW's lore more.
Anyone play this game?
How is the PvP in it? Or is it mostly PvE?

There is PvP, but last I heard it was terrible, PvE is excellent though.

The PvP is pretty awful, since this game has a lot of intentional desync on player locations the PvP looks really sloppy where people can be hitting you with melee attacks from range.
I mean it's not the worst thing ever but it's definitely something you can skip with no regrets.
As people have already pointed out this only means that 5mil people actually bought the game basically.
That number does not represent the active subscribers.
The number is still impressive. Edit: The number includes China but S.Korea just started their FFXIV realms so it sure will grow even more.
SE does not talk about active subscribers, the only number we had was around 450k back in early 2014 from one financial report but since then the game has grown a lot and it still continues to crow.
I play it since it's 2.0 release in August 2014, it is still awesome and continues to be more awesome with their steady supply of content patches with major updates every 1.5months and raid updates every 3 months.
Interesting fact is also that only 292 characters have beaten Alexander 3 Savage yet and 4 is still unbeaten. (Thats the current endgame raid that was released more than 1month ago.)

(The translation on top is a bit wrong, its how many characters have beaten it not entered.)

World of Warcraft has at least 12.5 million accounts as of last year (and that's if every single on of those 12.5 million accounts has 40 created characters on it. I'd say a more reasonable number to shoot for is ~25 million accounts.

PvP is basically skipped. No one talks much about it because it's bad.
PvE is extremely solid, extremely fun. MQ can get a little fetchy at times, but it's easy going.
As someone who only kinda did Guild Wars 1, got to max level in Guild Wars 2, and did a dabble of Wildstar - FF14 is the way to go. It's just really good. It's really good to slog through the MQ with a friend or two too - you'll only have to split up the party at certain points, and you can just reform right after 5 minutes later. Due to their Duty Finder too, you can do all the "dungeons" and trials (big boss fights) solo, or with a single friend, or with many people. It automatically fills in the missing slots with other players looking for it. Super fun.
And the community is quite nice. I'm nearing Level 50 and I've only run into a single asshat. Most people are extremely polite during dungeons.
