• Formatted wrong hard drive 21% of the way need files back
    10 replies, posted
I was trying to format my flash drive through command prompt and accidentally picked the wrong drive. My 2nd hard drive got formatted to 21% until I noticed and stopped it. I need to access the files on the drive that weren't wiped but windows wants to format it after I assigned the drive a letter. Is there anyway I can few the files on it without windows wanting to format it?
recuva might work
recuva might work
Tried it, it said it couldn't identify the boot sector and did nothing.
I don't think it's possible, the format probably deleted the boot sector and file system files before it did anything else
Maybe you should double checkbefore you do something as important as formatting.
First off, you should REALLY make sure that you pick the right partition/HDD before formatting. Second, try running TestDisk and pray that it finds the remains the MFT. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk (run as admin) You may be lucky enough to get everything back.
Format the rest and then try a disc recovery program. As long as you only formatted and the file system is still the same, the files should be okay.
Did you do a quick format or complete?
Sounds like a full format if he got to 21% and had time to notice and cancel. If so, most of the files will be unrecoverable. Some may be intact, but the majority will be partially complete or destroyed.

Ouch, formats are usually something that you should take time considering and checking before just going.
