I've been looking around for an Android device with a physical keyboard yet the only phone I can find is the G1. I've been looking at it for a while but now I can actually afford it, it's beginning to look a bit dated. I've been hearing stuff about the G1's lack of internal memory and the inability to store applications on the SD card and it's worrying me about agreeing to a 18 month contract. Is anybody here a G1 owner, or someone who can advise me on whether it's worth still getting a G1 or waiting out for a newer Android device with a physical keyboard?
I'm not sure if this should be in fast threads or here, I guess it could suit both? But please move it if it's in the wrong forum.
I think I read somewhere that there's a new version of the G1 coming out. Then I think there's some on verizon that have a keyboard. You could also try looking around for phones that have been hacked to run android. My HTC Vogue runs windows mobile by default but I can boot it into a hacked android and 99% of stuff works, I just get shit battery life. HTC seem to be the brand that's really running android on most of the stuff it has out now, so they'd be your best bet, plus there's a bunch of models that run WM but can run Android too with the hack.
I thought that the G1 wouldn't get some features of the latest android update or something to this extent.
I have a G1 and it's great, I have yet to encounter any trouble with applications on my 8GB SDHC card, and I've never heard of such problems.
Google is still developing new applications and updates, and I don't think you'll have to worry about it being dated, the iPhone is older and it still gets a lot of stuff, doesn't it?
The G1 is pretty awesome.
It's a great phone, buy one now.
apparently it may get updates

Are your applications being stored on the SD card itself though? From what I read, they're stored on the internal memory for security reasons. Is yours a hacked version?
The G1 is a good phone, but it is a bit slow sometimes. Mine is rooted, so there are no limitations on where I can store things, but applications themselves are tiny and there is plenty of space on board for it. If you do have something that uses a lot of space, most of the data is stored on SD, the executable just has to be on internal storage.
But G1 is looking a bit dated. The other android phones have significantly better performance. In fact, I firmly believe that if hardware as powerful as the iPhone ran android, then Apple would be doing a lot worse right now. Google calls the development version Dev Phone 1, and there is every indication that there is going to be a second one, hopefully fixing some issues with the G1. For example, Donut (the Android 2.0 update) is reportedly not going to be runable on the G1, and Google should release a dev phone 2 shortly before Donut's release. (current version is Cupcake v. 1.5)

I would at least wait until the end of the year. Reportedly, there is going to be some 25-odd new android phones on the market by Christmas, and aren't cabled to t-mobile either.

I believe they are, and mine isn't hacked.
