The year is 1945 and WW2 has come to an end in Europe. Japan and the United States are still at war and the US is at a point to make a serious decision. Do they invade Japan and risk tens of thousands of American and Japanese lives or use the newest and most destructive weapon in the United States’ arsenal. In this essay I will consider four points as to why Truman used the bomb and then in a conclusive paragraph decide whether he was justified. The four possible reasons for the use of the bomb are; he wanted to impress the USSR, he wanted to end the war quickly, he wanted to use is in revenge after Pearl Harbour, it had costs so much to develop that he couldn’t allow such a massive amount of money to disappear.
He wanted to impress the USSR.
The USA and the USSR were not friends and the only reason they weren’t fighting each other is because their mutual enemy was fighting them instead. They were constantly attempting to one up each other and show that they were the dominant superpower in the world. This brand new bomb that the USA has would be the perfect opportunity for Truman to demonstrate the military capability of the United States of America to the USSR and ultimately show that they were the dominant force and that Russia should not even attempt to compete. The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima and on Nagasaki was the perfect opportunity to show that the USA could and would also use this weapon on anyone who would threaten them.
He wanted to end the war and spare American and Japanese lives.
The war has already claimed thousands and thousands of American lives and dollars. The US was sure that Japan wasn’t just going to give up and this assumption was correct as they refused to surrender even when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The full scale invasion of Japan would cost thousands more American and Japanese lives which was obviously not a good thing. The atomic bomb offered a solution to the consequence of mass loss of American life which Truman could have seen as the light at the end of the tunnel. It allowed the possible millions of casualties to never happen and in the end completely ended the war in a miniscule amount of time.
He used it in revenge on Japan for Pearl Harbour.
Pearl Harbour was one of the closest escapes of WW2. A massive blow to the navy was the potential outcome but the US escaped due to pure luck. Japan used some dirty tactics during that attack and brought even more new tactics into play. Truman could definitely have seen the new atomic bomb as a way of getting back at the Japanese for their dirty war tactics. It would have been an excellent way of demonstrating that nobody can do such atrocious things to the USA. It would have given Truman an even better response from his citizens. This makes Truman look like a better president and as a result people like him and as a result of that he gets re-elected as the president.
It had cost so much to actually make the bomb that it’d be a massive waste to put it on a shelf.
The bomb cost around $2 billion to actually make and research. To then simply put it on a shelf and say “We will not use this!” would be a massive waste of time, money and would make people (such as the USSR) see America as being weak and show the enemies of America to be stronger. This is of course not something that you as the leader of a country want to endorse. It’s also not a very good idea to show your country that you’re willing to waste $2,000,000,000 on something you’re never going to use rather than putting that large amount of money into public services and the public sector.
In conclusion the most likely reason for Truman using the bomb was to impress the USSR. This reason for using the bomb results in coming to the conclusion that Truman was not justified in his use of the atomic bomb. The use of a weapon of mass destruction on a Japanese city to impress another country is a stupid decision to say the least. That is like someone punching someone in the street to impress his friend. It’s a barbaric method of clutching at strings of power that are dangling precariously above the USA and USSR at the time. Truman brutally murdered thousands of Japanese men, women and children simply to show off to another superpower. Truman should be held solely responsible for the thousands of lives that he destroyed when he dropped that bomb. He should be charged with 200,000 counts of murder in the first degree serving a sentence of up to 12 million years in prison or 200 thousand life sentences.
