Hello, I have a Linksys WRT54G Router that I have connected to my computer via Local Area Connection.
However, when using it for about an hour or so, the connection simply changes to "Local" and I seize to aquire any internet connection. The only solution is to simply restart the router. There has to be something to resolve this issue. It's quite annoying to say the least.
It works fine whenever I use my wireless USB adapter though.

Are you torrenting by any chance. It seems to be a common problem with that type when it's getting too many connections, it'll lock up until you restart it (Torrent's aren't necessarily the cause always I think)
Installing DD-WRT firmware seems to fix that as you'll be able to set how many max connections it can have at once and how fast it should drop connections again.

I'm not torrenting at all, usually I'm just playing games.
There was something a while ago about some routers trying to "optimize" itself every hour or 30 minutes, they would drop connection a lot and you would have to reset it, or go into the settings and turn it off.
This is a known problem with all Linksys routers that stems from all Linksys routers having a 10BaseT WAN port. Normally, this isn't a problem, but when your cable/DSL modem has a 100BaseT only Ethernet port (many Toshiba and Motorola cable modems do), the Linksys router can't properly negotiate the connection and will constantly drop it after failing.
The best solution is to throw that piece of crap in the trash and get a more reputable brand. If you want to keep it, you can work around the bug by getting a cheap 10/100 4 port switch and putting it between the router and cable modem so it looks like this:
(Cable/DSL Modem) ---> (10/100 Switch) ---> (Linksys Router)
Another problem is that Linksys routers can corrupt game packets, resulting in you getting kicked out of a server. This is still a widespread problem with HL1 and its mods, infamously called "getting steamed". You can check the console after this event happens and see a list of engine calls, with the last one being SVC_BAD due to packet corruption.

That really only applies to torrenting when you can have hundreds or thousands of connections open. He said he wasn't doing that, so that's likely not the problem.

I've never heard of this, but I'm not going to rate you anything because I could be just as easily wrong as you.
Anyways, I've had a similar problem. My first generation WRT54G would freeze if more than one person was being bandwidth intensive at once. I tried a couple of fixes people posted online, but the only thing that solved it for me was to flash the firmware to the latest version of DD-WRT.
Hope this helps! I know how frustrating it is.
I used to have this problem, except it dropped while refreshing server lists for any game.
Fixed it by flashing to Tomato. It's a much cheaper option (free) than GiGaBiTe's solution.

I had six of the bastards of all different revisions and they all had the same problem I described. I chose the alternate route and built my own router on a P4 3.2 HT, 1 GB RAM and IPTables. It uses more power, but I can run other stuff on it like a web server, file server, SQL server, etc. so it makes up for it.
my server runs on mudkipz :P
