FYI eSports players over there are considered to be national celebrities so it's not exactly all that funny, I'm surprised this wasn't done before.
This is awesome, I can't wait for eSports to get bigger and bigger until watching it becomes as "normal" as watching regular sports.
I don't know if it'll catch up to football, but it'd be cool to turn on the TV and have a Counter-Strike tournament on.
What's the point? Why would you build a massive arena for the sole purpose of stocking it with computers? You might as well rent out a local community center and rent a dozen or so computers for eSporting purposes.
Fuck you, MLG.

did MLG take a dump in your shoes or something man I don't understand this hostility

he probably tried to be a leet gamer but was rejected by an MLG sponsored team
The thing I hate about competetive gaming is that, all I ever see, is League and Dota matches. I rarely see CS and Quake anymore.
These "eSports" only include MOBAS as far as I'm aware, which is really sad.
MOBA's and Starcraft. Both of when I would rather watch paint dry.
Now something like a high-skill racer like Trackmania I would pay to see done professionally.
Watching competitive Trackmania is actually pretty boring. The spectating tools are just lackluster and very little exciting things can happen.

CS:GO is gaining ground as a solid competitive game.
MLG pro building

360 noasbestos buildstreak
The concession stands are filled with Doritos and Mountain Dew
How exactly would the layout of it be, though? I can't imagine a stadium layout that isn't simply a crowd surrounding a few computers.

Then you haven't seen how tournaments in stadiums are set up.

Likely multiple stages with big screens.

It's people being paid purely because they can LAN. There's no athletic ability or anything outside of tactical and strategic skill being exercised. You're just sitting at a computer for hours on end. Even Cricket has more going on in a game.
The only reason eSports took off is because the sponsors can make amazing amounts of money whole doing almost nothing.
did MLG take a dump in your shoes or something man I don't understand this hostility
he's just pointing out that it is a stadium ment to display only a few dozen computers, it is kinda wasteful, i mean a soccer stadium requires a soccer field, or a baseball stadium requires a baseball diamond, but e-sports just require being able to seat people and show them the game...
now if they were building a big stadium with a giant map for the floor, thatd be p-cool

they're being paid because they're better and more dedicated than the other millions of people who play the same game, and also because there's a sizable number of people who are willing to watch them play.
whether you're willing to call it eSports or not, it still shares the same three basic components that any sport does: a competitive game, players and spectators.

All I see is money.
really what they ought to do is do something like the hatsuni miku concerts only horizontal and have the teams on either side of some giant map in the middle of it all.
i think the whole deal is that it comes down to presentation of the game and less with actually the venue, so they really don't need a dedicated stadium, just some place to develope their stuff
[editline]27th April 2014[/editline]
something like what they've done at the last couple winter olympic venues

you know MLG hasn't been profitable until literally about 4 months ago right
How exactly would the layout of it be, though? I can't imagine a stadium layout that isn't simply a crowd surrounding a few computers.
a huge pit where the players will be with their computers inside cages.
losers get a lion in their cage
really what they ought to do is do something like the hatsuni miku concerts only horizontal and have the teams on either side of some giant map in the middle of it all.
Except Hatsuni Miku literally prints money. People seriously overestimate how much money eSport teams make outside of the top three teams in their respective game, and not including China or South Korea when it comes to Dota and Starcraft II, respectively. League of Legends almost doesn't count either because if you're a team in their world circuit Riot itself is literally paying you to play.

So you're saying in order for something to be a sport you have to be moving? Because that sounds dumb.

Are chess and snooker not sports then??
All I see is money.
congratulations
this is also what other pro sports like soccer and stuff are about. I bet some of the higher-ups in the FIFA scene don't even know how to play soccer.

Welcome to sports.

The fighting game scene is still pretty lively.
