Sometime in the future I'll be holding another competition. The USB Mod Competition was a slight success, but I'm looking for something better.
Suggest and discuss competition themes here.
Don't flame someone about their idea unless you have a better one.
Prize will be a 7200rpm SATA 250GB HDD with a molex for power.
:siren: Ideas that won't be considered: :siren:
• Case Mod
• Cable Management
• Anything expensive
• Anything involving hardware that isn't easily accessible by all
The first thing that comes to my mind is Overclocking... but there are plenty of other forums for that, and not everyone has a good chipset/CPU combination.
Suggest away!
Underclocking contest.
The "using hardware for other uses than it was intended" contest.
The "using hardware for other uses than it was intended" contest.
That's a neat concept. We'd have to rule out using magnets from hard drives on your refrigerator though.
Keyboard mod contest. You really can get them anywhere, and free. It'd make for some awesome ricer mods . And how about a most-unnecessary-cooling competition? :v:
I've suggested these before, I still think they're competition worthy.

Oh boy I already have a killer idea. :neckbeard:
Underclocking forever
[editline]06:17PM[/editline]
just has to boot
The "using hardware for other uses than it was intended" contest.
voting for this
"Finding a cool use for old hardware". That's my vote.
i also vote for underclocking contest. it would be easy, and theres less potential for major cock ups than overclocking.
i would also participate in the "using hardware for other uses than it was intended" contest tho
I've got a shitbox old laptop that can barely open the start menu, underclocking would probably reduce it to nothing
Underclocking is something that everyone with a computer can do

That's the point :v:
IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A SCREEN!

I found an article 2 years ago where this guy got an overdrive down to 18MHz and booted into xp. I'm trying to find it but to no avail so far.

Yeah they got it down to 8MHz :wtc:

30 minute boot time... :psyduck:
and i thought celerons were slow :psyboom:
I have tons of old hardware, and nothing to do with it. :sigh:
Ideas would be great before starting a contest :v:
oh oh i got a idea for the "using hardware for unintentional purposes"
take the heatsink off a pentium 4 and put a cup of tea on it while running prime95
drink warmer

or 4x GTX480s running furmark = space heater
My personal favorite... using HDD platters as clay pigeons.
Undervolting competition: protip, do it anyways. I used to use my Dell laptop as a space heater, ran at 35W battery consumption at the default voltage, cut it down by like nearly a volt and now it runs at 25W battery consumption and the fan almost never needs to come on. Did the same with my HP tm2, but it's already a CULV, so it didn't do anything :v:
I underclocked my netbook to about 600MHz once. Then it crashed. Might be able to go lower, idk, I was benchmarking it with Youtube vids, which slowed down tons.
The use of old hardware thing is pretty vague, though I've got a couple laptop motherboards and random pc cards lying around, no idea what I'd do with them.
In a couple days I'll make a poll thread with the best ideas to get an idea of how many people will enter.
Shiit nigga
gotta get my 15 megurgurz celly benchmarking again
lets underclock (or overclock) our phones. my hero goes all the way down to 19 MHz before it starts getting impossible to use
Gonna underclock my Pentium MMX MOTHERFUCKERZ! 166MHz! 8mb RAM!
Try to make a competition anyone can do :V
Even the overclocking/underclocking stuff is difficult/impossible for people on laptops or with crappy motherboards. Most laptops have hardware-locked multipliers.
Undervolting works on almost all laptops though.
I don't think it's possible to under/overclock a Palm Centro.
Yeah I've been trying to come up with something that will be available to everyone.
But the fact that I had bitching about getting flash drives for the USB Mod competition makes me lose hope.
Why not a custom Heatsink, Haven't seen one of those in a while.

They've had that idea before, it didn't work out.
Case Mods.
Case making?
I'll make my case out of ovens, then my graphics card will NEVER break!
