• Ping in games is up in the 200s

Alright so I've had this problem for a while and it's really put me off from playing games online. It seems that every server everywhere is giving me 200+ ping. There are some servers that give me less than 100, and those are just fine. But this is just silly. I've tried opening ports for certain games as well as not even using my router. My ISP is CenturyLink and I am using a Belkin router. I got a new computer a couple of months ago along with a new ethernet box that Century link sent me after having problems with my old one. I haven't had this problem before but it's been like this for a few months now and I would really like to play online. Suggestions?
If it's for all servers then you might need to upgrade your internet but I believe you can check how much info is being sent to your house through the atnt website idk.
Could it be the ISP I'm using?
post speedtest. [editline]9th January 2011[/editline] and pingtest, especially pingtest

Find an IP of a server you usually go on but have trouble with. Open CMD and do the command "tracert <IP>". Post output. If you do this for a few servers you can usually find a common denominator, for example I was getting very high pings for certain french servers. turns out when ever my connection was routed through the french internet exchange it pushed my ping up to 400+. I am only in the UK!

I tried joining the highest populated ARMA II server that showed up, and I went to their website to get the IP of their server and when I put in the command it gave this.
Are you saying the lowest ping servers are 100+? I can't really understand. Sort the server list by ping and they're all 100+? Someone might be using most of your bandwidth, and/or putting too big a load on your router (torrents with lots of connections can do this).

Try sorting by ping ingame, what's the lowest pings?
Yeah the trace above is going from washington to frankfurt, It's no wonder that in that instance the ping is high.
Play in servers closer to you... You live in USA, you have many choices... I live in Estonia, I have almost no choices... Or however that word is this written?
Does this not tell you guys anything? The first server is within 50 miles and OP still gets over 150 ms.
He should try multiple servers. Also, OP, are you on a wired or wireless connection?
Does this not tell you guys anything?
A transoceanic trace is no good for troubleshooting. If a certain hop keeps coming up which is causing you greif you know who's responsibility it is, if it is owned by your ISP then you can supply them with the trace and they will investigate it. If the hop that raises the ping happens to be your own router then you know it is that which is your problem.
ISP is CentryLink, I think? Embarq = CentryLink, at least - I think that's DSL, is there a filter on your phone line in?

Get better internet :frog:
Yeah, when I play on EU/USA servers with 4 megs, it's around 400ms to USA, and 250+ to EU.
56kpbs, with that cross oceanic jump, pings would be in the thousands.
That sounded really fucking cool, I imagine that line being in a sci-fi movie. "What? 56 KBPS?!" "Shepard, with that cross oceanic jump... Pings would be in the thousands" "Not now Tali, we've got a london to save." And then a shark eats them.
