• Plots for a Webcomic

I am a fairly good artist, and I wanted to start a comic. The internet is the best way to get it around nowadays, but I don't want this to have anything to do with roommates or videogames or bad puns like most webcomics do. Anywho, I need some form of plot to base the whole thing around, something that I can keep working off of. I was thinking either steampunk or scifi themed, but anything awesome will do. So yea, throw some ideas at me. (I hope this goes in fast threads, as it is a post your and question thread.) [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] I'll post some work of mine in a bit so you can see my style.
Interesting. It depends on your art style, in my opinion. Post something?
Yea, I'll scan something once I can get that damn scanner working. Think a mixture of Calvin and Hobbes and Shank. I usually do pencil on Bristol board and take it into my computer to color it.
Start it off as a normal gamer comic but then have an unexpected abortion subplot happ- oh wait. [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] In all seriousness, should be a sci-fi comic, where people on a ship go off to explore new planets (Star trek style)
Just for this thread, it's crap, but shows what I draw like. I'll get one of a person in a sec. That art style woudl fit a post-apocalyptic dystopian environment, I think, where things are dull and seem unreal (hence the undetailed/super-realistic graphics). Maybe make a comic about rebels trying to overpower one of these governments? Have it focus on intelectual topics, like diplomacy and such. Maybe make the star character the "inside man" on the government. You could have him killed later on, for a plot twist.
I don't want to do a videogame comic, but that's not to say I couldn't. Throw in some creeper jokes and you're golden
Why not make multiple comics? A videogame one, a serious one, a random one, etc. That way, you aren't held back by your topics, whenever you feel like doing a comic, you can do it. When you don't feel like updating a certain comic, you don't have to, because you can choose a different topic. Not only it is easier on your patience, you get a wider variety of training.
I like that idea. For the post-apoc one I was thinking about it taking place in a large city, where all sorts of people/zombies/experiments are wandering around, all with some chip in their brain that makes them not see how fucked up everything is. Could make for some good Bioshock 2-esque scenes where it goes from creepy utopia to "well shit." I'll start a thread in CC
Do NOT include video games in any way, shape or form. Please. We need another video-games based webcomic like we need another hitler.
Be very careful not to let it fall into cliche, it's a total killer. Make it so it forces you to think about the real world. Take things that people like and truly believe in and make it end up in a complete catastrophe. Have an insane dictator be killed and then displayed to be a great leader. Have the cure for cancer slow down the production of cells in the vacinatted's newborns or something, making them all deformed and stuff (maybe those could be your zombies). Have an average Joe doom the planet to save his wife or his daughter or something. (Honestly, I consider this to be the pinnacle of idiocy, but it's a common idea in people, look at how fucked up we are).
You might want to team up with a writer who would otherwise not be able to draw their own comics.
Don't worry, I'm being careful of both. And I refuse to mention the word zombies even once. The creeper comic was a joke
Do it, but not officially, have your characters call them zombies or monsters occasionally, but not the actual government/scientists/etc., it's what would happen in real life. Relatability aids with immersion, immersion aids with the questioning yourself thing I posted above. Also: can we follow "etc." with a comma? We shoudl since it's an abbreviation and not an actual punctuation mark, but still....
Alright, I asked around, and I think the general plot will be thus: The world has ran out of resources. There is no oil, no plastic, no gas, very little metal aside from scrap. Humanity is doing it's best to colonize another planet, which will happen eventually in the comic. Earth is still orderly and civilized to an extent, but people resort to boats and shanty towns instead of cars and cities. I'll draw up some concept art and make a thread for it. Thanks for the help
I don't spose you need writers? PM me a short outline of some small event, tell me what you want the general atmosphere to be like, i'll give it a shot, i'll send it back, if you're not impressed you can print it, fold it into a bag, shit in it, set it alight and throw it at me on the street. That's what they usually do...
May I suggest that, without fossil fuels, we resort to burning lumber causing massive deflorestation and the appearence of a rebel environmental group? Maybe you could have 3 factions: The lumber lords, the rebels and a secret society of scientists that are also working on the colonization. They know that, eventually, we'll destroy our flora and fuck up our world, but they know that it's useless to fight as the people are brainwashed with propaganda and shizz, so they're in it for themselves,. Maybe the rebels could appeal to the people and fail, since farmers are now considered the pillars of society, and therefore, everybody would now be socially upgraded (which would drive physicists and the sort to the secret society and to the rebels). Maybe add some gang that started in the rebels but that were thrown out because all they wanted to do was create an anarchy to fuck everyone up. Maybe the government could sabotage or ally and then double-cross the scientists. I'm having tons of fun writing this, if you want some help, I'll be happy to collaborate with you and ol' shit face up there.
You're a nice man... Is this gonna be a deadly serious, or is some manner of humour allowed?
It's serious, but humor is a must here and there. I am working on a little test comic just to see if I can, looks good so far.
