For all the slack it's getting, I still think this looks pretty neat.
It does look pretty tough.
At 8:30 in the video, I find it funny how Garrett steals all those items right next to the guard as he walks in a round about fashion. Hard to be believable. I mean come on! Realistically speaking, Is the guard so stupid or deaf he can't hear anything even in a quiet closed room when garrett seemingly opens many drawers and door. Anyway just my nitpick, most games like this suffer the same AI problem.

As for noise, I didn't think he was that loud. I'm a little bit more optimistic about the game although the "swoosh" ability feels very strange and unneeded. (Minor nitpick but I hate the health/"mana" bar design.)
I am kinda excited. I think the swoosh ability is rather cool and would be fun to use unless it is very prone to abuse. It adds the feel of Garret being "invisible" since he can just swoosh away. Visuals both in style and quality look very nice too I'd say. Won't buy until a proper review comes out but overall looks very promising.
looks really fucking good cant wait to buy it
It's fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I've waited years for this game, and I am not disappointed in the slightest.
It's horrible, absolutely horrible. I've waited years for this game, and I am disappointed in the slightest.
That looks incredibly fun. I'm getting some Dishonored vibes from how the gameplay looks. (or is it backwards? I haven't played any of the previous Thief games)

One of the main influences on Dishonored were the Thief games and now it seems the new Thief is inspired by Dishonored.
No Taffer no purchase.
The fire goes out when its raining, must mean there's a thief around here, and that I should crack his head open for putting out the flame that I can re-light in 5 seconds.
Oh sweet. Another Dishonored DLC!
"Wasn't anything I guess" "Too bad". I was expecting something better.
"Wasn't anything, I guess" Why "next gen" is never about AI. Just... why. It's garbage, it's a shameful display showing off your AI being this dumb.

A significant part of his stealth ability is likely derived from keeper training. It is why shadows can effectively make him invisible instead of merely slightly harder to see. It isn't unreasonable to assume that he can muffle sound slightly as well. In reality, you are probably right and the AI is simply stupid, but there is potentially a lore reason for that transgression in particular.

While it is explained that Garrett has some limited Jedi Mind Tricks, he also has a high-degree of skill; despite the fact that he's never completed his training, he is considered to be better at stealth than the master keepers who have, who have full mastered their Jedi Mind Tricks. He's probably just really good at opening drawers and doors. You too can get better at this with practice. By lifting up on a door while opening it, for example, you can minimize the squealing of the hinges. With practice, you can open most doors totally silently. With that in mind, we should note that Garrett isn't a keeper in this game, as far as we know. They got rid of magic, I think. He's just an average Joe now. Finally, this has always been like that in stealth games, especially Thief. It would be far too frustrating if it was "realistic." 100% ghost runs wouldn't be possible, because you would be required to knock out a few guards to open a drawer without alerting them. It makes sense from a gameplay perspective. [editline]15th February 2014[/editline] Though if you wanna get fancy, you could probably say that the guards patrol like that for the whole night each day. They probably hear strange noises all the time. They hear the drawer opening and probably figure that it's just a random bump in the night and not worth looking in to. He probably mentally blocked out sounds like that a long time ago.
"Wasn't anything, I guess" Why "next gen" is never about AI. Just... why. It's garbage, it's a shameful display showing off your AI being this dumb.
It starts to break the immersion and feel stupid. Back then when games looked bad and AI was bad everything was fine. But now visuals and atmosphere are very immersing and yet the AI is so out of place stupid.
"Wasn't anything, I guess" Why "next gen" is never about AI. Just... why. It's garbage, it's a shameful display showing off your AI being this dumb.
Because developers design the AI like this on purpose because they (mistakenly) believe that stealth games can only be fun when you feel super powerful against utterly moronic AI that has very predictable patterns you must game to win. And they feel they have to do this because getting caught equals a failure, so if its easy to get caught if you aren't clever yourself then you feel like you have to start over. Its dumb and stupid and boring. This is the reason why stealth game genre tends to be more like a puzzle game than an actual ~stealth~ game. One of the reasons I'm excited for Aliens Isolation even though I don't care for the IP at all is because the AI by all accounts I've heard is really fucking good, and you have to really try and avoid detection and outsmart it before it outsmarts you. And when you get caught, its not a failure state. Sounds very dynamic and exciting to sneak around in.
Finally got around to watching the video. That didn't look too terrible, truth be told. The voice was less offensive than I originally thought. And to be honest, if these games had "Realistic" AI then these games would be impossible because no rational person would fall for these tricks. Concessions need to be made to make the game playable. All games have a degree of realism taken out for the rule of fun, not just stealth games. [editline]15th February 2014[/editline] And like I said, it kinda makes sense. On a dark, stormy night when you're up all night patrolling the streets it makes sense to assume that the guards would think their mind was playing tricks on them.
I hate gameplay videos like this, just the way the camera is nice and smooth looking around when its nothing like that in any game.
I hate gameplay videos like this, just the way the camera is nice and smooth looking around when its nothing like that in any game.
Some people get motion sick from watching other people play, what with jerky mouse movement.
I hate gameplay videos like this, just the way the camera is nice and smooth looking around when its nothing like that in any game.
It is when you play with a controller.
I hate gameplay videos like this, just the way the camera is nice and smooth looking around when its nothing like that in any game.
The reason it's so smooth is so people can actually observe what's going on. It's kind of like directing a film. Look at any mod trailer or anything. They all have obnoxious jerky mouse camera movements.

And it's kind of impossible to make them behave like real people would, because real people are unpredictable. I don't think I'm asking for too much when I ask for some more life in NPCs. Just a little bit more. More details. Make it harder, but without overdoing it. Hero shot a fucking arrow at that fire. And that guard didn't even try to look around, just stood there like a retard. Make him search for the PC, just a bit. Looking around, checking dark places or something! Another one, a guard "patrolling" in circles. Exactly the same pattern. Looking at the same things. Over and over again. Make his path a bit more varied, make him look at more things at random. Come on, it's not that hard and it has been done before. And then "distractions". This idiotic concept has to go completely. You can't make a person go to a certain place by throwing a bottle there. And then this, someone has to do an "impossible" game, so everyone else in the industry can look at it and decide how far they want to take their game. Like Demon and Dark Souls. I'm not saying that necessarily Thief has to be that game, but someone has to.
I think The Dark Mod has some of what you're talking about. Semi-random paths, alert mode, etc.
The new voice actor isn't half bad. Pretty Garrett-ish
