BattleField Bad Company 2 freezes with sound looping
2 replies, posted
After about 10 minutes of BFBC2 multiplayer, the entire PC freezes, while an annoying "VRRRRRR" sound gets played through the speakers (the sound looping). And when I say 'freeze', I don't mean something CTRL alt delete can fix, it even takes like 5 seconds for it to reboot after the reset button is hit. I can play the singleplayer without any problems at all, and I've also been running both Crysis and GTA IV maxed for several hours without any problems, so I know it's not because of overheating. I also let FurMark run for about 30 minutes just to be sure. The GPU never went over 65 Celsius.
Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2,66 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte P55 UD3
RAM: Crucial 2x2GB 1066 Mhz DDR3
GPU: Sapphire ATi Radeon HD 5850 Extreme
HDD: 1x Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB & 1x Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
PSU: CoolerMaster Silent Pro M 600 W

Just found out it's on punkbuster servers only, I can play on non-punkbuster servers just fine.. Hmm...
Both of my friends who play bbc2 have this and we don't know what causes it, only that I don't get it but there seems like there is not much difference between the computers.

Found the problem: Realtek's sound driver: http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2832654347718379170/
Option 1: Disable Realtek onboard sound chip in BIOS and use USB or PCI audio add-in card/device.
Option 2: Follow directions in the link above and disable exclusive mode in the driver settings.
Bugging me for ages since I upgraded from a VIA-based onboard sound mobo to a Realtek-based one.
