• Win 7 RC read only file lock on by default?
    10 replies, posted
I have 32bit Win 7 RC, with two hard drives. My second hard drive(D) is data only, including my music. Since I've installed Win7 and put my music on there, Itunes won't let me edit song info, cover art, and so on. I right click the file, any of the MP3s, and check and sure enough it's "Read only". I uncheck that and click apply. Then right click and sure enough, it's back to 'read only' again. I assume Win 7 has some kind of lock on by default. The weird thing is if I put the file on my C drive(primary) it's automatically not 'read only'. I can edit it however I like. Any tips how to unlock the second drive? I have admin privileges and password. Thanks.

I've tried that, starting from: The ENTIRE D drive, and all subfolders Just the Itunes music folder, and its subfolders Just the band folder, and all its subfolders Just the album folder, and the files in it The individual file itself No matter what, it always resets immediately back to read only. I'm thinking there must be an overall option somewhere, in Windows Explorer or something, that is preventing me from changing that setting on the D drive only(since the C drive works normally). But I'm relatively new to Win7, never used Vista, so I'm not sure where to look or even what to look for.
You could try running itunes with admin privileges, or edit the security settings to allow editing access to everyone. To Give A Program Admin Privileges: Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: To Allow Everyone Access: Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Step 6: Hopefully it works for you.

Aha, that looks good. I'm gonna try that. Thanks, and I'll post what happens in case other people have this problem.

Alright, it works! Okay, I THOUGHT I was logged as admin, I used the password and everything. So I was just clicking the Itunes shortcut to run it. I guess I must be in some kind of subadmin account, even when I log in with my admin name and password at bootup. Anyways, simply starting Itunes using 'run as administrator' fixes the problem. Yay! I have left off the option to let everyone(or program) do it, I only need Itunes to do it right now. Thanks a lot, this was driving me crazy because I was all set to organize my music this afternoon and didn't want to have to copy all 1000+ files to my C drive to do it.

Okay, I understand now. That explains a lot of what I've noticed going on.
