Are graphics cards compatible with only certain computers?

I have a old computer and a new computer. I'm getting a new graphics card(gt 440) for the new comp. The graphics card that's currently in it is the ati raedon 2400. I was wondering if I could palce that graphics card into the old comp. The old comp is a Compaq Presario SR2020NX.
It entirely depends on what slot type the video card uses, and which slots the old machine has available.
I'm assuming you have a PCIe slot in the new machine (for the GT440), so if the old machine also has a PCIe slot, then it should work. There is one exception that some cards that use the PCIe 2.0 standard, won't work on PCIe 1.0a slots (but will work on PCIe 1.1 slots.) The only way you'll figure that out though is by trying the card.
Just don't try anything stupid like taking a hack saw to the connector on the card to make it fit in a slot it wasn't designed to go into.
