Steam hangs while downloading massive files and portable HDD being weird after that

I don't know what kind of problem is this, never found one before, but here goes.
I was downloading massive files and left it overnight, next morning I woke up, Steam became unresponsive and 'Steam.exe has stopped responding' as if my hard drive's plugged out. After that, my hard drive couldn't load anything at all (it was longer than it should be, but it says 'couldn't read drive). I had no choice but to plug it out.
I suspect my hard drive's dying or the laptop's motherboard went wrong. Any ideas?
The internal laptop hard drive is malfunctioning? Or you have an external USB hard drive that isn't working?
It's external hard drive, it's functional, but it's acting weird when Steam hangs while downloading huge files.
I might wanna try re-install Steam and see if this fixes anything.
It's possible the hard drive is going to sleep after a while, especially since it's external, or the USB ports are going to sleep

I left it overnight few weeks back, and it was fine. I wanna try this as well.
Re-installing Steam didn't work, changing hard drive state and USB ports didn't work as well.
I can confirm my external hard drive dying and in need of a replacement.
