What's up geeks, I'm here because I need help picking a laptop. I'm going to start university soon and since the laptop I'm using right now got it's monitor busted, i decided to get a new one instead of fixing what I have.
So, I'll need a laptop that's good enough for gaming, image and video editing and probably 3d programs, because I'll be studying Architecture.
I don't really know how much I should spend, but around 600€ or so would be fine.
My mom wanted me to buy an average computer to use for a couple of years, so that later on I could buy a better one for around the same price. Stupid idea? You tell me.
And also, what would be the best place to buy the thing: Online or retail?
I saw an Asus K55VM (this I think) at the store today. amazingly it has the same specs I think, but its 700€ (around 900$)
The only difference I see is the brand. Would Lenovo be trsutable? There's no Lenovo computers on retail stores here

The graphics card isn't that good from what I've heard. True?
630 is ok ish.

Hmm, i was hoping to play games on high or something but I guess I won't be able to unless I buy a high end computer.
Any other worth mentioning?
Well I've been looking around Lenovo laptops. No matter how good the cpu rest of the specs are, the graphics card will always be a 630 if the laptop is above the 600$.
I guess I should just get that Lenovo posted here
I have a Lenovo Ideapad that cost $600 with an i5 2450 and a 540m (which is exactly the same as the 630m, just rebranded) so it's almost the same as that Lenovo posted above. It's worth it for $600, I'd say, it plays source games on med-high with ~150-250 fps, Deus Ex HR on lowest settings at ~30 and dips to like 20 when you look at extremely open areas (which is passable in my book) etc. Basically, older Source games and games pre-2010 pretty well at the native resolution. Newer games will struggle, but its passable. Besides, you're playing on a laptop, can't expect too much for $600. Just don't turn on AA.
Also, definitely buy a laptop cooler, when your palm rests on the metal when you're playing games you'll get burned otherwise :v:

I have one of these. Bought it in a chinese store for like 3€. And I don't know how effective they are. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite and it's kinda hot. Maybe the fan is dusty since I havent cleaned it in a year or so

Not in my experience. Mine survived a good 6 foot fall with come case damage, the laptop still runs fine. Their customer service is a pain in the ass though. Cost of repair ran me $200, charged beforehand, and I still don't have an address to ship to.
Acer are typically poorly built. Their main market is cheap laptops and to do that sacrifices have to be made with build quality and materials.
[editline]15th September 2012[/editline]
That type of plastic construction extends to many of their more expensive models as well. We're not talking solid feeling matte polycarbonate either. It's like comparing a Samsung Galaxy S to a Nokia Lumia. Both a form of plastic but one is definitely not as nice when it comes to build quality and quality of materials.
I don't know, the one I own feels pretty solid. Then again, I've never owned another Acer, so I don't have anything to compare to.
The cheaper range of acer stuff is fucking awful. Their mid-high end stuff aren't TOO bad but there are alot of better built laptops out there.
If you're using a laptop for university you needn't to worry about specifications.
A notebook will do you fine, unless you're a gamer...

sorry for the bump, but here it is

Is it worth it?
You'd be better off staying with the i5.
http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-LED-Backlit-i5-3210M-Processor/dp/B008RH54GI/ref=sr_1_214?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1348593082&sr=1-214&keywords=lenovo
this one doesnt tell me the graphics card though, but if anything itßll be a 630m I bet
It looks like it uses the GPU in the i5
so is that a no?
[editline]25th September 2012[/editline]
what about this one? It's AMD instead of Intel, would that be fine?

AMD APUs are pretty damn nice when it comes to the GPU. The CPU part gets outdone by intels i series chips though.
[editline]25th September 2012[/editline]
You can play BF3 on medium with an APU
cool, so should I buy this one or the other one?`
And whats the difference between GPU and CPU if you dont mind explaining?
The GPU is what processes all of the stuff on your screen. In games it renders all your models and slaps the textures on them as well as lighting. The CPU does background stuff like physics, game logic and that sort of stuff.
You'd be fine with an APU if you don't mind waiting a minute or 2 longer for a video to compile.
I guess not, I dont think I´ll do that many videos in the future as I used to. So unless there's any other disadvantages or better laptops, Lenovo IdeaPad Z585 it is if you can give me an Amen
You can set it to be an A8 in the laptop for 50 euros more (in the dropdown), but yeah, I reckon that laptop'll be good for you.
The one I am getting after shopping around a bit is a Lenovo y580.
It costs about 949 on Komplett.ie
Has an i5, a 660m graphics card, 650gb hdd, 8gb of RAM.
There are other models that have an SSD and 1tb hard drive and i7 with a blu ray drive, but I can't find any in Ireland.
Watched videos on YouTube and the model with the i5 can play BF3 on Ultra it seems, with a good FPS, 25+
http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/site/SearchResult.aspx?searchTerm=y580
Theres the link.
I don't know where your located but I think Komplett can ship elsewhere, they also have a german site
Bump again. I bought the laptop (Lenovo Z585)
aaaaaand
the color of the laptop in the website doesnt really match the one that I have right now. It has a rather feminine touch to it, which I did not request at all (since theres no fucking option like that afaik)
http://i.imgur.com/A9BUh.jpg
As you can see, its not exactly gray. Theres a slight tone of violet/pink that kinda bothers me. I've been looking at it for so long I dont even know what color it is anymore. The can is there to provide a comparison between the gray on the can and the laptop.
So yeah, just wanted to talk about it here
[editline]5th October 2012[/editline]
also, the wireless thing seems to be a bit too weak. I used to be in the same place with my old toshiba and it wouldn't lose connection, but in my lenovo, sometimes i get 3 bars, sometimes I get 1, sometimes I lose connection. And my roommate, which also has a lenovo, and is just a bit further from me, gets connection without a problem
Did your HD applications accelerate?
Look at the pwoer settings and see if there is some power saving feature on the wifi.
(Right click the battery in the bottom right of your taskbar)
