(Re-posting this from another forum, I'm kind of in a hurry to figure this out) I've been dealing with terrible internet for a while. I've tried wireless routers/adapters but they have produced inconsistent speeds. Just recently, I noticed that some wall outlets in my house have ethernet ports on them. However, I'm not sure how to set up the network. There is a main panel in the house with what appears to be an area where all the cables meet. (Please excuse me, my knowledge of networking is fairly limited). So my main goal is to make the ethernet ports on 2 outlets work (I only need it in 2 rooms). Is it possible to achieve this with only a modem and a router w/ 4 ethernet ports? I'm using a Cisco WRT160N and an AT&T modem. Any help is appreciated. I'll try to update with more info if necessary. Here's basically what I know... Phone jack on wall ---> modem ---> ethernet cable ---> Router (Wireless) Lets say I move the modem into that control panel area, how/where would it receive a connection?
assuming it's just wires straight through the walls, you could just plug the router in at one end and plug something else in at the other end No harm in testing out, just plug your router into a port, then try every other port in the house with a laptop or something
Problem resolved. Thanks kaze4159
You should put the router in the network box if possible, if not then you should put a tiny switch into it, plug the router into the ethernet outlet at the room ,and then in the networking box plug all of them into the switch with little jumpers.
