• Steam will not start, says I need to connect to the internet

If I use a shortcut, it looks for steaminstall.msi. I can connect on both IE and Firefox, but Steam won't acknowledge it. If there is a way to fix this without re-installing, I'd like to know, but I'll re-install if I must. I should note I got hit with the AV2010 trojan and it fucked my shit up.
Check your firewall settings with your antivirus. Do a system recovery to an earlier date before you got hit, after you tried the advice above.

I had this issue. Open ports in firewall.

Try deleting everything in your steam folder except steamapps and steam.exe and then run the exe, this will redownload / reinstall steam but you won't loose your games. Requires a re-log in.
