I link my Xbox to my Monitor via a HDMI to DVI cable and then run the sound component via a converter into my line in on my PC which then outputs the sound via my Speakers. Or you can plug the jack straight from speakers into the converter and it works fine. I also do the exact same with my Playstation 3 also.

well obviously if your monitor uses dvi and your xbox uses hdmi then you want a hdmi TO dvi

A DVI to HDMI cable on the other hand costs around 10 bucks. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812576006

Don't Xboxes come with analog cables instead of digital though? Or am I behind the times?
Make sure you have a HDMI Input on your monitor, your screwed otherwise. I simply use my TV as a monitor sometimes, when i want to play something casually for a few hours. Then again.. my setup has a PC Monitor on one end, and a TV Monitor typically playing something from youtube. (As its a smart tv.) Yeah, HDMI is pretty much a must if your using xbox.

OP, is this xbox a 360 slim or xbox one? Because the 360 original and xbox original don't have HDMI out.
