Phenom II x4 am3 ; am2+ , does it work for am2 too?

I have been thinking about getting an upgrade for my computer so I can render faster with 3ds Max, and maybe also play gta4 better.
In a lot reviews it is stated that phenom II cpu's are compatible with am3 and am2+.
now I had a quick wiki check and it also said that am2+ is backwards compatible with am2.
Now my question is, if I were too buy a phenom II x4 955, would it work with my am2 motherboard?
What's your motherboard?
No, it would not.
My motherboard is a MSI K9N SLi-2F (MS-7250) AM2 ATX
I'm sorry, it's not compatible.....
cheap the mobo manufacturer's website for a bios update
Isn't that AM2+/AM2?
If so, look for a BIOS update.

also if it isn't, just get one of the AM2+ Phenom IIs.
The 955 is an AM3 socket and he wants to put it in a AM2 board? How am I wrong?

They're typically backwards compatible, depending on the BIOS.

Ooohh okay, thanks.
I'm learnin'.
Check your mobo manufacturer's website.
So would it be better to buy a new motherboard and a 955, or get a different cpu which supports my motherboard. if I should get a different cpu instead of a new motherboard, which one ?
if the motherboards bios can be flashed to AM3 then that is fine but a 785G is a pretty fantastic mobo.

I just had a look at the prices, I can get a 955 and that motherboard for only 230 EUR, and apparently it also supports DDR2 so I don't have too buy new RAM, in which case I think I know what I am going too buy next, thanks for the help guys.
