So I bought a dell powerconnect on ebay a while back. I'm trying to configure it through the console so i can configure 3everything. Unfortunately i keep running in to the error can't open com1. Please check the port. Not sure what's going on. I'm using the proper settings. I've tried using both a usb to db9 serial cable and a straight db9 cable. I tried connecting using with putty and hyperterminal on a xp, win 7 and win 10 machine. I'm at the point of not knowing what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you checked that (especially the USB adapter) is actually using COM1?
The usb actually uses COM3, but yes I'm sure it's using the proper com.
The port should open for HyperTerminal regardless of anything even being attached to the physical socket. Something's trying to use the port and your terminal emulator can't get control of the port.
That's what I thought. But I see no reason it shouldn't be able to open it. I used a program to check all processes and it says that the com ports aren't in use.
Been a while since I've worked on non force series dells, but do they support bitrate changes? If the previous owner had changed the bitrate. You're specifying COM3 to be used? I assume you've already factory defaulted the device?

It was said to be factory reset when I got it and the only way to factory reset it seems to be by using the console. there's a reset button which I've used but I assume it's just to power reset it, not factory reset it.

So I found something that says i'm supposed to be using a null-modem/crossover cable. i was using a straight through cable. still not sure why the usb to serial wouldn't work but i just ordered a crossover cable so hopefully that works once i get it.
Well I got the new cable today and still doesn't work. Guess all that's left is to take it down to my buddy at his computer shop and see if he could figure it out for me.
