Hey, I'm currently in the market to buy a new phone. I currently reside in the UK (Scotland to be precise). About 2 years ago I bought a Blackberry Storm, now it was an okay phone at the time but nothing to the standard iPhones were at that time. Now the market has had time to adjust to the iPhone and I've heard there are a lot better phones out there.
Now what I'm looking for in my phone is decent battery life, 3g connection, Can't be with Vodafone (bad signal in my area) and for it to be able to play videos in HD.
I was looking into the HTC HD7 on O2 but I have no real knowledge about phones, I mean compared to current iPhones how does the HD7 stand up and if it doesn't what phones do.
If you're looking at high end devices:
The HD7 and Desire HD are practically the same, except the HD7 runs WP7 and the Desire HD runs Android. WP7 is somewhat of a fledgling OS right now so approach with caution.
The Samsung Galaxy S is very good (Samsung have also done the same thing as HTC, releasing the Samsung Omnia 7 as what is effectively the WP7 version of the Galaxy S).
If you want a keyboard then the HTC Desire Z is pretty great.
An iPhone is fine too.
If you're feeling crazy you could get a Palm Pre 2.
Nokia's N8 is pretty hardcore, but it's running Symbian^3 which is some dinosaur OS. Some people love it, everyone else hates it.
I recommend you have a quick scan of the Android thread.
You first need to decide what operating system you want to use before you pick what phone you want. Blackberry OS, Android 2.x, Windows Phone 7, iOS4 etc. Android's my favourite but WP7 seems pretty amazing too, had a play with it a few days ago.
Also there have always been better phones than the iPhone.
I liked the look of the HD7 due to the screen size. It looked quite nice for watching stuff on.

Though if you pick the wrong one you're stuck with it if you're a student.

Cross posting this from the Android thread:
Not really. The build quality is terrible. Dodgy screen(The colours are great but it blurs motion really badly and there are lines going across the screen. The touch screen is really poor too, jumping about when you take your finger off and spazzing out when dragging horizontally), quiet tinny speaker and flimsy back covers.
I had to restore mine several times when I got it before it worked properly, and even then it slows down to an unusable level after about 2 hours requiring a reboot. I'm currently awaiting a replacement from Three but HTC have stopped shipping them while they fix the problems(Hopefully) so it could be anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks.. Despite the problems it's a fairly nice handset(My first experience with Android). Like I said the colours on screen are great and for the most part it's responsive and smooth.
Needless to say I am very dissapointed considering the handset price is £470 off contract. I expected better quality for the price.
Not sure if the HD7 is in the same boat, but read a couple of reviews before you take the plunge.
Galaxy S all the way, especially if you are after it for video playback.
Best screen on any phone on the market, and can play 720p mkv files with full subtitle support (using mVideoPlayer).

Don't go with O2, their 3G coverage is the worst of all the networks
If you live in an urban area (like a big town/city) go with 3 and take advantage of their awesome 3G coverage
If not then orange/t-mobile is a safe bet
Hey, I still like my Storm. Doesn't mean that I'm not looking forward to June when my contract expires though.
Im grabbing myself a Motorola Defy for Christmas, its a quite nice phone.
I personally use a HTC Desire on tmobile and it is great. I would say get the Desire HD but I would wait until HTC fix it first. A standard Desire or a Desire Z would be fine though.
To be honest I'm looking for a phone with a good battery life for music, good video playback for movies/tv shows and a decent amount of apps that allow me to other things on it (games/facebook/twitter etc).

T-Mobile and 3 are the same 3G network. Orange and T-Mobile enabled roaming between their networks so they are effectively the same 2G network(Although you can't use Orange's 3G network on T-Mobile and vice versa yet)
So T-Mobile and 3 have equal 3G coverage. T-Mobile give you a 3GB FUP on all Android phones, and just cap your speed when you go over that. 3 give you 1GB and I have no idea what they do when you go over.
T-Mobile is also great value, so I'd go with them.
I have a t-mobile pulse, it costs £10 a month plus £35 for the handset. With it I get unlimited internet (as a standard for all android phones on t-mobile) 100 texts, 100 mins and a booster (I have unlimited t-t calls).
