I wish they had a more authentic looking Roman armour.

Nothing wrong with that sort of thinking but the armour they came up with looks pretty ugly imo.

that, and the roman military garb changed a lot through the empire, so adopting/"copying" a style would a bit unimaginative

Its not really that unique, its just Roman armor with some weird gold trim here and there.

I enjoy eye candy type games every so often, just not when they're sold full price.
I can put up with shit gameplay if it means having a good visual experience when the price is right, and a right price for that sort of experience means below 12 euros for me.
Even though the limited gameplay was boring and repetitive I couldn't help but feel awesome being inside/in control of the testudo formation. Always thought of this game as an interactive pitch for what the next gen is capable of graphics wise than an actual game.
