Both of which are likely going to suck horribly, especially if they even closely follow Gordon or Chell's story.

They could do Half Life 2 in the perspective of a resistance member and you only see Gordon for a few scenes and in background shots.

Because 1: We know the story already. It doesn't work in the case of games mind you, unlike books, because games are already a visual media, plus the addition of placing yourself IN the world.
and 2: Silent protagonists aren't characters. They don't work well in transitions from one media to another.
Besides, if I was going to make a movie out of a game, these would not be my top choices. I don't feel they'd work as anything but games, especially Portal. Considering its a puzzle game, and that wouldn't work as a movie remotely.
Eh
They should wait until they install "Yes" or "No" buttons in cinemas, so the Portal film can just be a bunch of puzzles that revert to the last loading screen if even one of the audience members gets it wrong.
I wouldn't mind a spinoff following characters that actually speak.
A sidestory would be nice, maybe follow a bunch of scientists and guards attempting to get the fuck outta Black Mesa, sorta like in Blue Shift.
Valve hasn't accepted it yet, and I doubt they will since they probably want to keep it in-house.
guys, you're all wrong, the movie is actually episode three
Half-Life movies could work, just do not follow Freeman. Portal has interesting plot even before events of the games as we could see from the comics. Potential is there, too.

Oh good I thought they were being serious about it.

The only reason Gordon is silent is so that the player can place himself in the game.
If they made a movie, Gordon will talk. With Valve's writing and Abrams's directing skills, I'm VERY interested in what movie comes out of it, be it Portal or Half Life. And to a larger extent I'm interested in the game that Abrams and Valve are apparently talking about making.

Odds are a Half Life movie would explain what went on between Half Life 1 and 2. I would VERY much like to see a movie that focuses on right after Half Life 1 and then at the end introduces the Combine invasion but doesn't go into it. After HL1 and before the Combine is very untouched territory, and it'd be cool to see what they could come up with.
I'd love to see a movie made using the Source Film Maker, I don't know why.
Now are we talking live action or animated? An animated Source engine film would be totally cool in my books as long as keeps distant from the main stories, but I don't think live action is a good direction for either of them. It can't see Valve games transferring well to a set.

I've waited my entire life for a TF2 feature film made in SFM but Valve just won't give it to me.

Not sure, but I think it would be very likely that it would be done in SFM.
Though I could imagine this looking far grittier than the actual games for some reason.

I think if Valve produced it, it would still be considered in house. Really, Valve probably wouldn't try to direct the movie themselves since they're not professional film makers outside of Source Film Maker.
I respect JJ as a director, but seriously fuck off JJ you already have star wars and star trek.
Hollywood leave fucking half-life alone.

The best way to approach a movie based on a game is to tell the story of OTHER characters the player does't interact with (or atleast not much) and have the plot revolving around them, showing details the player never aquires in the games.
It's always bad to retell a story you have already played, it does destroy the bond you have build up with the main char.

Valve's cinematic team is extremely capable of directing a movie and I think valve would love to venture forth into that area. They love branching out, and so do I as long as it's all in-house.
I want to see a SFM half-life movie.
Morgan Freeman as Gordon Freeman.
I think the main thing everyone agrees on is that the story should be good if they don't just retell the story from the games to a t; having an alternate perspective on one of these series will be the best way to portray the individual storylines.

gabe was the one who talked about it lol
Gabe said the lead actor in their video games was like a retarded autistic person... well I guess that's the perfect person to put in charge of the movie/s then.
Go for it JJ.
There's going to be collaboration: which means Valve would be overseeing the project.
If that's the case, it's probably going to be good.

I think returning to Black Mesa for a film would be a mistake.
It just feels so very 90s. I mean we've got the first Resident Evil where they're all trying to get out of a lab or something, we've got the Doom movie and all the rest of that. I just think that in comparison to a Combine-focussed film, Black Mesa is a bit too stale
They should be as faithful as they can to the original games as possible in my opinion.
