• What's up with my GPU?

Let me preface this by saying that, while I'd say I have an above average knowledge of computer hardware, I'm definitely not immune to asking stupid questions or general ignorance on areas that I'm unfamiliar with. So please bear with me. I'm currently using a Gigabyte GTX660 with 2gb of vram and an advertised "1098mhz" core clock. However, under 100% load, HWmonitor reveals only 594mhz is actually being utilized. I was considering upgrading to a GTX970 or 980 before knowing this, but I am now skeptical if I should, as my card itself appears to be under performing by nearly half of what it should be. The card is part of a fair-priced prebuilt machine I got from iBuyPower back in March 5, 2013, so that'd make it 2 years old as of today (Wow, I just now realized that while typing this) Also, HWmonitor reports a peak temperature of 160F under 100% load, and I'm not sure if I should be worried about that or not. (My instinct is I should not be, as my previous card was overheating atrociously at 250C before I stopped using it for obvious reasons) Any insight into either of these matters would be greatly appreciated.
HWmonitor could be giving off as a false reading. Use EVGA Precision X for a much better reading
Well my card is a gigabyte brand, would I be able to use EVGA Precision for that or should I look for my brand equivalent?
EVGA Precision will work with any card. Well, any nvidia card at least.
you can use evga precision x with any card [editline]5th March 2015[/editline] * some amd cards do not run (gfs HD7750 refuses to work with precision x) [editline]5th March 2015[/editline] oh piss off level
So you were right. I will no longer be using HWmonitor for my readings lol. Any insight on whether 63c is an acceptable temperature on such max load?
You really don't need to worry about temps too much. You'll get throttled long before any physical damage can be done.
Alright. Thanks for the help guys!
