The other day I was playing grand theft auto 4, and suddenly my XBOX red ringed out of no where, causing my temper to raise above the roof. Then, as I was about to look online how to fix it, the power went out for several hours. I thought for sure I'd never play it again. Later that night, I tried again and it turned on like nothing happened. Tell me facepunch, what could have caused this?!
It overheated, then cooled down possibly?
This isn't uncommon. It just needs to cool down. I'd watch out though, don't use your 360 for extended periods of time or you will get the red ring again. Be prepared to send it in within the next month or two.
Put ice in your xbox.
from my experience it might red ring again and so on until it you have to repair it.
If your in the US I would suggest trading it in for one of the newer models, before it has a chance to permanently RROD.

ftfy
With the new firmware update they released, before any damage could occur to your Xbox, it shuts off. You usually get 2 rings instead. When you turn it back on again, you SHOULD have gotten a message saying the system was turned off to protect it.
In the end, Microsoft didn't really fix the red-ring, but I guess what they did is still a decent solution.
3 red rings only happens when the power supply overheats. Its ok op
Just pour a little water on it:)

Uh...
Your "fact" is so wrong I don't even know where to begin

If it overheated, it would be two lights. Not three.

The red ring is simply a indication saying something is wrong with the system, regardless if it is temporary or permanent. You can't "fix" a warning indication unless you remove the LEDs permanently.
The power cable night not have been hooked up properly, just that one pin not making contact. I had the same problem before.

First off, it can flash 3 lights if something is wrong with your PSU, or GPU, or CPU, or anything else hardware related.
If it overheated, it depends on how old the system is. It could be 3 on an older system. 2 lights is supposed to be overheating, but not always. My old one would flash 3 lights if the A/V cable was unplugged for instance. Same with overheating, until the last one which was a GPU problem. Mine did come back a couple times until it stopped completely.
I think everyone here knows removing the alert indicator does not "fix" anything, it just hides the problem and creates more problems. (Like a broken alert indicator for instance?)

-I know that. The fact that he made it so definit about the only cause is overheating PSU made is completely wrong.
-Again, I know that. If your system were to shut down suddenly due to overheating, it will NEVER be 3 lights, but always 2. Of course, the real cause depends on the secondary code
-You're missing my point entirely there.

The red ring was supposed to be an indication of hardware failure. It is possible the GPU got too hot, and shut down (I have a few ATi cards that have done this... xbox uses ati)

His statement wasn't wrong until he said it was the only cause. I'll give you that. But....
It probably won't shut down suddenly. Again, it depends on how old it is. Mine did not shut down, it is an older system. It overheated, I know that was the problem, it did not turn off, it did not show 2 lights. As for the secondary code, what would that be? My screen turning black? Sounds like the GPU overheated. Maybe it did shut it off after all and kept the fans going. After cooling for a while, it happily sprang back to life.
Your "point" seemed more of "removing the indicator would fix it" somehow, more than "it could be temporary, don't give up hope on your xbox until you know its permanent when the GPU is rattling around in the case having peeled off from its solder points and come loose from under the heat sink."

Secondary error code is the precise code the console give you, by holding down the sync button and press eject 4 times. Each code is unique to what the red lights are caused (You probably know this already)

That's still not fully what I was trying to express.
Other than that, the three red light is merely an indication of a generic hardware (or software) failure, which can range from the infamous warped solder joints under the GPU, to corrupted CB section within the NAND. You can't simply say "hey microsoft, fix the three red lights already", because that would be too generic. It would have been better even if a simple statement that is less broad is used, such as "Hey Microsoft, fixed the potential overheating issues that causes consoles to fail overtime"
You sure your power cord wasn't just slightly ajar?
